Wills witnessed by video during the pandemic to be legalised

New rules will allow a will to be witnessed using
video conferencing software, such as Zoom, Facetime and Skype.

The new rules will be backdated to 31 January 2020
-which was the date of the first confirmed coronavirus case in the UK.

The government has said the use of video technology
should remain a last resort, but it may be useful in some circumstances.

The Government is introducing legislation to allow people to use video-conferencing technology for the witnessing of wills being made.

If a married person with children dies without leaving a will under the intestacy rules the surviving spouse receives:
1. a set sum presently of £250K but from 6th February it is increasing to £270K.
2. household contents, clothing, any cars and
3. half of everything else
with the other half of everything else being divided between the children.
If that person is in a relationship, but not married, under the intestacy rules everything goes to the children.

Overdue update increases the amount spouses and civil partners are entitled to if their partner dies without a will.
