What can you do if one parent refuses vaccination for a child?

Disagreements between parents about medical decisions are more common than people think — especially when it comes to vaccinations.

In the UK, both parents with parental responsibility must usually agree on important medical decisions. If one parent refuses consent, the situation can be resolved in a few ways:

👉 1. Try to reach agreement first
Courts expect parents to make every effort to agree in the child’s best interests.

👉 2. Seek mediation
A neutral mediator can help resolve disputes without going to court.

👉 3. Apply to the Family Court
If agreement is not possible, you can apply for a Specific Issue Order under the Children Act 1989.
The court will decide based on the child’s welfare — not the parents’ personal beliefs.

👉 4. Can a child decide? (Gillick competence)
In some cases, a child under 16 can consent to medical treatment if they are considered mature enough to understand the decision.
This is known as Gillick competence.

However, this is assessed carefully and depends on the child’s age, understanding, and the specific circumstances.

Key point:
The court’s priority is always the child’s best interests, including their health and long-term wellbeing.

Tenants must end their tenancy in writing, with the correct notice period (usually one month if rent is paid monthly). Without it, you could still be liable for rent.

Our Notice to Quit Letter (£12.49) makes it clear, simple, and legally correct.
