Thinking of running cable outside for lights, a shed, EV charger or garden power?

Standard PVC cable (the grey stuff you see in most indoor jobs) is NOT UV stabilised.

Sunlight breaks it down over time. The insulation becomes brittle, cracks and eventually falls apart — exactly like you can see in these photos.

Once that happens, the live conductors inside are exposed. That’s a serious risk of electric shock, short circuits and fire… and it can happen faster than most people realise.

Don’t risk it with cheap indoor cable just because “it’ll be fine for a couple of years.”

If you’re planning any outdoor electrics, get a qualified electrician in. It’s cheaper than dealing with the consequences later.

You flick a switch and the lights come on💡. You plug an appliance into the socket and it runs 🔌. So everything must be fine! 🤔 Right?

When the electrical installation is nearing the end of its life everything often still works but the protective layer can have broken down over time. Live conductors become exposed. This is when serious problems can begin. Often on rewires we are amazed the house hasn’t burnt down. One of the projects we are on at the moment is one of those instances. The installation was in a dangerous condition. Fortunately it was barely used and there wasn’t a lot of demand on it and the new owners very sensibly opted for a total rewire before moving in.

Well, we like to think that we are a well rounded business able to provide a range of quality services. But while doing a rewire on an 18th century lodge (mansion basically) we wandered into the cellar which also happens to be the ‘well of the souls’ showing us the location of the Ark of the Covenant!

Sometimes when working on houses, especially when doing rewires, we discover some interesting stuff. Old newspapers are always nice to find. I realised this week that old is relative as we removed newspapers being used to pack out walls.

Me: “Oohhh old newspapers! I wonder if there are any interesting articles”

Apprentice: “wow that’s really old”

Me: “aww no it’s not. What a shame”

Apprentice, clients and far too many people: “Yes it is, that’s really old”

Me: “oh”

Time is relentless apparently. Anyway, houses were a lot cheaper in the early 90’s….
