MYTH: You can’t claim if you’ve already moved out.
FACT: You may still be entitled to compensation, even after your tenancy has ended.

Under UK tenancy deposit law, landlords must protect your deposit within 30 days of receiving it and provide you with the correct prescribed information.

If they didn’t, you could claim 1–3x your deposit in compensation. Moving out doesn’t remove your legal rights.

What does that mean?
It means landlords know enforcement is weak. It means complaints go nowhere. And it means your tenancy deposit is often the only real leverage you have when things go wrong.

From May 2026 the Renters’ Rights Act will start tightening the net, with stronger rules and tougher consequences for landlords who don’t comply.
