Purchasing a Pre-Paid Funeral Plan is a big decision and it is essential that you know exactly what you are taking out.

Here are a few pointers to help you when considering a funeral plan:

‍🎓 Do your research! If you are struggling to find credible information about the company then there is probably a good reason for this so therefore only take out a plan with a reputable Funeral Planning Company

‍🎓 Arrange a home visit to discuss/set up your plan where possible. This gives you an opportunity to find out exactly what you are purchasing and find the right plan for you

‍🎓 Only purchase the plan that YOU want. Do not feel under any pressure to go with a more premium plan if it is not right for you

‍🎓 Be careful if you are considering purchasing a plan directly with a local Funeral Director. They will normally have an agreement with just one provider meaning they can only offer/sell on behalf of that company. This leaves you without choice or comparison. We recommend researching the different providers and speaking to an independent consultant who can talk you through the differences between each plan to help you reach a decision

‍🎓 Understand exactly what is and isn't included in your plan. If you are looking to have all of the essential costs covered then be sure to ask the company/consultant about 'disbursement allowances' (these are the funds set aside to cover the crematorium/burial and associated costs. You should expect an amount of around £800-£1200 set aside for these). If these are not included in the plan then make sure that you have sufficient funds or a life insurance to cover these few at time of need

‍🎓 Be wary of 'guaranteed plans'. These plans are designed to ensure that both the Funeral Directors fees and the crematorium fees are guaranteed to be covered regardless of how long you live. Despite the majority of these plans doing exactly what they say on the tin there are many examples of these plans only being guaranteed for a fixed period for example 5 or 10 years. This means that should you live beyond this period you will have to pay more money to keep abreast with inflation. Our advice is always ask how long the plan is 'guaranteed' for. Most non-guaranteed plans are structured to be future-proof anyway so do not feel pressured into a guaranteed plan.
