At this point, I didn't have a plan for the future.

I'd only been in the Army a few months.

My biggest concern was probably just getting through training.

And, judging by the Christmas "run" outfit, I clearly had other things to worry about too.

I certainly wasn't thinking about property.

I wasn't thinking about life after the Forces.

And I definitely wasn't thinking about what I'd want my finances to look like 10 or 15 years later.

Looking back, I wish I'd started thinking about it sooner.

Not because I should have known exactly what I wanted to do.

I couldn't possibly have known.

But I could have started creating options.

That's one of the things I wish someone had explained to me when I was serving:

You don't need to know where you're going to start preparing for where you might end up.

That's a big part of the conversation I now want to give to serving personnel.

Resettlement gives you time to prepare.

It doesn't give you unlimited time to figure everything out.

Starting earlier simply gives you more breathing room.

More time to learn.

More time to make mistakes.

More time to build options.

Sometimes opportunities aren't obvious.

Sometimes you need to create them.

Yesterday was another round of researching properties, identifying potential vendors and putting letters through doors.

Will every letter lead somewhere?

Of course not.

I'd rather be taking action, getting my name out there and letting people know there are other options that could help them.

You're taught how to leave the Forces.

You're taught about resettlement.

You're taught how to write a CV.

Very few people ask: "What are you doing today that gives you more choices tomorrow?".

That's the conversation I wish I'd had.

Life in the Forces teaches you to be resourceful.

That's a real strength.

But it can also make it easy to think you have to figure it all out by yourself.

You really don't.

Sometimes the biggest step isn't making a financial decision.

It's simply deciding to have a conversation.

I saw it all the time when I was in.

New BMWs, Audis and Jags sat in the car park all week, losing value.

There's nothing wrong with wanting a nice car.

But imagine if you bought the asset first.

Something that could grow in value and generate an income, while you got on with life.

Then, when the time comes, let the asset help pay for the car.

It's not about saying never.

It's just about saying not yet.

🚨 𝗡𝗼𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗺𝗲 🚨

Looking back, I wish someone had sat me down while I was still serving and simply asked:

"𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘥𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰𝘥𝘢𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘧𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘬 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘧𝘰𝘳?"

Not because I was leaving the Army.

But because time was my biggest advantage.

I bought my first investment property because I wanted my money to work harder.

Only after leaving did I realise I'd been quietly creating options all along.

I'm simply trying to give people the conversation I wish I'd had.
