Earlier this week, I attended the The Society of Will Writers Conference 2026 🎉. Getting married soon💍? Here are a few important things to consider🤔:

1. Getting married will invalidate your existing Will📝. Instead of your assets going to the beneficiaries you previously chose, the first £322,000 (plus one half of the remaining estate) will automatically pass to your new spouse💒.
2. If you want your children to inherit, you must update your Will after the wedding⏳. Without this update, your previous Will becomes void and you may end up disinheriting your children.
3. Don’t rely on trust alone. If you have children from a previous relationship, there is no guarantee your new spouse will pass on their share—even if you have a verbal agreement✅. Relationships can break down, and it is impossible to predict how dynamics might change once you are gone.

Do you know what would happen to your children👨‍👩‍👧‍👦? Here are three reasons you should include a Guardianship clause in your Will:

1. Protecting your children🛡. Without a Guardianship statement in your Will, the decision about where they should go is left to the family courts. Whilst assessments are taking place, they will likely end up in the care system.

2. Protecting family members📝. With a Guardianship statement in your Will, there is no confusion about who will look after your children, preventing trusted family members fighting for guardianship.

3. Peace of mind😊. Once you know that your children are protected, you don’t have to worry about what would happen.
