🐄 Cows with calves. The risk factor that comes up time and time again.

One thing that stands out when reading reports of cattle-related incidents is how often cows with calves are involved.

The reason is simple. Cows can become highly protective of their young and their behaviour can be very different from what walkers might normally expect.

As The Cow Injury Lawyer, I regularly explain that most encounters between walkers and cattle pass without incident. However, it's important to understand that cows with calves can present a heightened risk, particularly where dogs are present.

🐄☀️ Warmer weather is on the way... and that means more people will be heading out into the countryside.

With temperatures forecast to reach around 26°C next week, many of us will be making the most of the sunshine by getting out for a walk, exploring public footpaths and spending time outdoors.

As The Cow Injury Lawyer, I know that warmer weather often brings increased interaction between walkers, dog owners and livestock.

The vast majority of countryside visits pass without incident, but a few simple precautions can help keep everyone safe:

✅ Plan your route before setting off
✅ Keep dogs under close control around livestock

🐄⚠️ Imagine having to call the fire service because cattle prevented you from leaving a field.

That's exactly what has reportedly happened to a family walking the King Charles III Coast Path in Lincolnshire.

According to reports, a couple and their young child felt forced to jump into a ditch to avoid advancing cattle and were unable to leave the area until firefighters attended. Thankfully, nobody was seriously injured.

As The Cow Injury Lawyer, I frequently come across stories where walkers are not injured but are left frightened, shaken and questioning whether they will use the same route again.

The vast majority of cattle encounters are uneventful. However, incidents like this highlight the importance of countryside safety and the challenges that can arise when livestock and public access routes share the same space.

🐄⚠️ "Bull in field"

I spotted this warning sign on Clarkson's Farm recently and it got me thinking.

When I speak to people about cattle-related incidents, one of the most common questions I receive is:

"Should there be warning signs?"

The answer is rarely straightforward.

Warning signs can play an important role in alerting walkers to the presence of livestock and encouraging people to take sensible precautions. However, a sign alone does not remove the risks that can arise when large animals and public footpaths share the same space.

As The Cow Injury Lawyer, I regularly hear from walkers who have encountered cattle whilst using public rights of way. Most encounters pass without incident, but it's important to remember that cattle, including bulls, are large, powerful and unpredictable animals.

Whether you are walking alone, with family, or with a dog, it is always worth paying attention to signs, assessing your surroundings and never ignoring your instincts if a situation does not feel safe.

The countryside should be enjoyed and respected in equal measure.

🚜🐄 Congratulations to Clarkson's Farm on making history at the National Television Awards.

The programme has become the first ever winner of the Reality Docuseries award, and it's easy to see why.

Whatever your views on Jeremy Clarkson, there is no doubt that the series has shone a spotlight on the realities of modern farming and the challenges faced by those working in agriculture every day.

As someone who spends a great deal of time involved with countryside and livestock-related issues through my work as The Cow Injury Lawyer, I have seen first-hand just how much hard work, dedication and resilience goes into British farming.

One of the things I particularly like about the programme is that it has encouraged conversations about farming that many people may never otherwise have had.

Anything that helps bridge the gap between town and country, and raises awareness of the people who produce our food and care for our countryside, can only be a positive thing.

🐄🚜 Back British Farming Day

As many of you know, I am known as The Cow Injury Lawyer.

While my work often involves helping people who have been injured in incidents involving cattle, today is also an opportunity to recognise the incredibly important role that farmers play in producing our food, shaping our countryside and maintaining the landscapes that so many of us enjoy.

Living and working in the South West, I see first-hand the contribution that farming makes to rural communities. The countryside we love, from public footpaths and rolling hills to grazing land and family farms, exists because of the hard work and dedication of generations of British farmers.

My work has given me a unique perspective. Walkers, farmers and livestock owners all have an interest in the same thing: a countryside that is safe, accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

So today, I'm taking a moment to recognise and thank the people who work tirelessly, often in challenging conditions, to keep British farming going.

🐄💧 How far would you go to avoid a herd of cattle?

A recent report on the Cattle Safety website describes a walker and his wife having to wade through a stream in order to escape cattle whilst out enjoying the countryside.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported. However, stories like this highlight an issue I hear about regularly from walkers across the UK.

Most cattle encounters pass without incident. However, when walkers feel they have no safe route forward, they can find themselves making difficult decisions to avoid a potentially dangerous situation.

As The Cow Injury Lawyer, I regularly speak to people who have experienced frightening encounters with cattle on public footpaths. Whilst cattle are not always acting aggressively, their size and strength mean that even curious or excitable behaviour can be intimidating.

No one should feel forced to choose between abandoning their walk or putting themselves at risk.

The countryside should be a place for everyone to enjoy safely, and raising awareness of these incidents helps encourage discussion about how best to balance public access and livestock management.

🌿🐄 A day in the Quantocks

One of the things I love most about specialising in cattle injury cases is that it gives me a real appreciation for the countryside and the people who enjoy it.

The Quantock Hills never disappoint. From spectacular views across the valleys to peaceful woodland walks, it's easy to see why so many people choose to spend their free time exploring this beautiful part of Somerset.

As The Cow Injury Lawyer, I often write about countryside safety, public footpaths and livestock. However, it's important to remember that the vast majority of visits to the countryside are exactly as they should be, peaceful, enjoyable and incident-free.

Days like these are a reminder of why protecting safe access to our countryside matters.
