County Durham and Darlington NHS Trust has issued a formal apology after reviews revealed shocking failures within its breast cancer services. Senior leaders admitted that patients experienced missed cancers, delayed diagnoses and, in some cases, unnecessary procedures — care that fell far below the standard they deserved.

Interim Chair Alison Marshall and Chief Executive Steve Russell said: “We let our patients down, and for that we are profoundly sorry.”
They confirmed the Trust accepts all findings and is taking urgent action to strengthen leadership, improve governance, and rebuild patient trust.

The reports highlight repeated missed opportunities, a failure to act when concerns were raised, and a culture that did not keep patients safe. The Trust has committed to ensuring these failings never happen again.

⚠️ Major Concerns Raised Over Durham & Darlington Breast Cancer Service

An independent review has uncovered serious and long-running issues within the Breast Surgery Service at County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust. The report revealed clinical failings, missed cancers, and cases where women underwent surgery that may not have been necessary.

The review also highlighted deep problems in leadership, governance, and culture, with concerns going unchallenged and staff feeling unable to speak up. Trust CEO Steve Russell has apologised, admitting that some patients did not receive the standard of care they deserved.

More than 200 worrying cases have already been identified, but the Trust has confirmed the total could reach thousands, dating back to 2019. Several patient deaths are also being investigated, and over 270 people have contacted the patient helpline so far.

The Trust says it is now implementing an action plan, including stronger leadership, new specialist breast consultants, and investment in modern equipment.

It is feared that failures at the trust may have affected thousands of patients.

County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust has confirmed that hundreds of cases are currently being reviewed — a figure that could rise to thousands as the investigation continues. No timeframe has been given, leaving many women facing a prolonged wait for answers.
