Press Release Date: 11th November 2024
Stoke-on-Trent's AirSpace Gallery to Close for Emergency Maintenance
AirSpace Gallery, a vital hub for contemporary art in Stoke-on-Trent, will be pausing all activities for an indefinite period due to significant and essential maintenance and building work. This decision follows site examinations conducted by Stoke-on-Trent City Council, which owns the building, located at 4, Broad Street, Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent ST1 4HL. The current condition of the building means that our studio provision and any building based public activities are unfeasible until emergency repair work and renovations are carried out. The City Council have agreed to carry out and finance these initial works, recognising the importance of AirSpace for the city and the significance of an important historic Victorian building in a prime location in Hanley. Once the works have been carried out and the building has been secured, further discussions between AirSpace and the City Council will explore the future developments and the longer-term use of the building.
Since its establishment in 2006 by two Staffordshire University Fine Art Graduates, AirSpace has played a pivotal role in fostering creativity and supporting artists in the City and region. The gallery has hosted numerous exhibitions, workshops, and events, becoming a cornerstone of the local arts community. Its commitment to showcasing contemporary art has not only enriched the cultural landscape of Stoke-on-Trent but has also provided a platform for emerging and established artists alike.
"As a long-term advocate of the central role the artist and contemporary art has to play in the success of our towns and cities, we implicitly understand the importance of AirSpace to the arts scene here in Stoke-on-Trent and of its reach beyond the city. Artists and artist-led organisations invariably have to work in poor conditions, but there comes a point where that is no longer viable for all concerned - staff, artists and the public. While this closure is necessary for issues of safety and securing the future of the building, we are hopeful that we can play a central role in ensuring that public facing contemporary art returns to the building and the centre of Stoke-on-Trent in the near future. " - Glen Stoker, AirSpace Director.
Unfortunately, the urgent need for maintenance, means that as well as all exhibitions and events being suspended for the foreseeable future, our remaining studio artists will be required to vacate the premises to facilitate the necessary work. AirSpace will work with the City Council in trying to find suitable new temporary locations for our studio artists.
AirSpace remains dedicated to maintaining essential links with existing projects and will continue to support artists, where capacity allows, during this closure. Updates regarding the progress of the maintenance work and any future events will be communicated through AirSpace’s social media channels and website.
