The Australian Government has delivered the 2020/21 Migration Program, including the largest Partner Program in over 25 years by processing in excess of 72,000 places for couples seeking to reunite.

The 2020/21 Migration Program has delivered 160,052 places against the planning level of 160,000 places, with the majority going to applicants already onshore. This has increased from 140,366 places delivered in 2019/20.

The Government has promised to increase the number of partner visas granted in 2020-21 to 72,300 — an increase from 37,118 last year.

Announcing the new figure last month, Immigration Minister Alan Tudge said "it will address nearly all the present applicants awaiting finalisation of their visa".

"This will give more certainty to those wanting to settle in Australia with their partners and plan for their futures."

But John Hourigan, National President of the Migration Institute of Australia, is skeptical about whether the focus on partner visas can shift the backlog.

The Federal Government has announced it will almost double the number of partner visas granted this year. It can't come soon enough for some.
