🌍 This Isn’t Just a Name Change It’s a Reckoning.
And a Promise.
Before Columbus ever set sail…
There were 574+ sovereign Native nations thriving across this landspeaking hundreds of languages, stewarding ecosystems, and building civilizations that shaped the Americas for millennia.
For generations, we celebrated a myth.
Columbus Day honored a man whose arrival marked the beginning of genocide, land theft, and cultural erasure for Indigenous peoples.
But in 2021, a turning point:
President Biden proclaimed Indigenous Peoples’ Day, stating plainly:
“America was conceived on a promise of equality and opportunity for all people, but that promise we have never fully lived up to. That is especially true when it comes to upholding the rights and dignity of the Indigenous people who were here long before colonization began.”
This day isn’t about erasing history, it’s about restoring truth.
It’s about honoring living cultures, not just “past” ones.
It’s about recognizing that resilience isn’t the same as justice.
And it’s about finally fulfilling that unkept promise.
