When your client misunderstands legal terminology…

I once spent the best part of 20 minutes in court making detailed legal submissions as to why the prosecution’s evidence should be excluded under the doctrine of res gestae.
After the hearing, my client called me back over.
Client: “Boss, can I ask you something?”
Me: “Of course.”
Client: “Who’s this Reggie Stye fella?”
Me: “What?”
Client: “Reggie Stye. You spent 20 minutes arguing about him. Is he a witness or something?”
Me: “No, it’s a legal principle.”
Client: “Oh, right. I thought he was a grass. I was gonna ask you to get his statement.”

Meanwhile a lawyer is at court having an interesting exchange with a client:

Client: If she didn’t want me contacting her, why hasn’t she blocked me?

Lawyer: Have you considered that not blocking someone isn’t actually an invitation to contact them?

Client: But she’s clearly leaving the door open!

Lawyer: Yes. Unfortunately, it’s the door to the Magistrates’ Court.

Newly Qualified Solicitor / Paralegal – Criminal Defence – Southampton

Highly competitive salary.

Missouri & Co is looking for an ambitious individual to join our busy specialist criminal defence practice in Southampton.

We are interested in hearing from either:

* a newly qualified solicitor, including someone qualified in another area of law who has a genuine desire to move into criminal defence; or
* a paralegal who has successfully completed SQE1 and SQE2 or the LPC, with a view to quickly progressing to a training contract.

The role offers the opportunity to work on a varied and interesting caseload across the Magistrates’ Court and Crown Court, as well as developing experience in police station representation.

For a newly qualified solicitor, a key focus will be developing Magistrates’ Court advocacy and progressing towards Police Station Accreditation and Duty Solicitor qualification.

For a paralegal, the role will provide hands-on experience in criminal defence with the opportunity to quickly progress towards Police Station Accreditation and, for the right candidate, a training contract.

You will work alongside experienced criminal defence solicitors, Duty Solicitors and in-house Higher Rights Advocates, with excellent opportunities for advocacy development, mentoring and career progression.

Previous criminal defence experience would be an advantage, but is not essential. We are particularly interested in candidates who can demonstrate a genuine commitment to criminal defence, strong communication skills, reliability and the ability to thrive in a busy practice.

The role is based in Southampton. Applications are welcome from candidates outside the area who would be prepared to relocate.

We’ve always given clients my business card.

Over the years we’ve discovered that, on occasion, they’ve subsequently been used as roaches. Not quite the repeat business I had in mind, but there you go.

This was a first though.

Halfway through a police interview, our client casually took out our business card and started flossing his teeth with it. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I suppose that’s one way of keeping your solicitor on a retainer. 😉
