Last year the Home Office announced its plan to change Settlement qualifying periods to 10 years in a new “Earned Settlement” model. Significant changes to UK Settlement rules are planned in 2026.

The UK will be moving to an “Earned Settlement” model, which proposes to increase the baseline qualifying period for settlement from 5 years to 10 years. Applicants will then be able to reduce this period by meeting certain requirements.

These changes might impact people already in the UK and on their route to Settlement.

Earned Settlement is currently in a consultation period, which ends on the 12th February. We’d encourage everyone to make their voice heard by responding to this consultation period on the gov.uk website, which we’ve linked in our blog.
