When was the last time you looked at your Will?

A lot can change in five years. You might have moved house, welcomed grandchildren, lost a loved one or seen your family circumstances change.

Yet your Will could still reflect decisions you made years ago.

It's worth reviewing your Will regularly to make sure it still reflects your wishes and the people you want to provide for.

At AHJ Wills & Estates, we help families across Sheffield and Rotherham plan for the future with confidence.

If something happened to you, who would look after your children?

It's a difficult question, but an important one for every parent.

Appointing guardians in your Will can help make sure your wishes are known and your children are cared for by people you trust.

We've explained how it works and what parents should consider in our latest article.

If you have children under 18, choosing who would care for them if you died is an important part of making a Will. We explain how guardianship appointments work and what parents should consider.

What actually is probate, and does every estate need it?

The answer depends on what the person owned, how those assets were held and their value.

Our latest article explains probate in straightforward terms, including when it may be needed, what executors have to do and how long the process can take.

Read it here:

Probate can be confusing, particularly when you're dealing with it for the first time after someone has died. We explain what probate is, when it is needed, how long it can take and what executors need to do.

Living together for 20 years doesn't give you the same inheritance rights as being married.

There is no "common law marriage" in England and Wales, and an unmarried partner does not automatically inherit if their partner dies without a Will.

We've explained what unmarried couples need to know in our latest article:

There are couples who have lived together for twenty or thirty years, raised children together, bought a home and shared virtually every aspect of their

Estate planning - It sounds like something for somebody with a country house, several acres of land and a suspiciously large collection of paintings.

In reality, it's about ordinary families making sensible plans for the things they've worked hard for:

- Your home.
- Your savings.
- Your possessions.
- Your family.

And, importantly, making your wishes clear about what you'd like to happen when you're no longer here.

At AHJ Wills & Estates, we help people make those decisions and put the appropriate arrangements in place.

No stately home required.

There's a phrase that comes up time and time again in the feedback we receive:

Peace of mind.

One of our recent clients came to us to arrange Wills for himself and his wife. Here's what he had to say afterwards:

β€œAn excellent service - Julie Booth was very knowledgeable and made the whole process of sorting both my wife and myself Wills a simple process and has now given us peace of mind that we have everything in place for the future.”

That's ultimately what good estate planning should provide: the reassurance of knowing you've dealt with it.

Well done, Julie, and thank you for the fantastic review.

Can you leave someone out of your Will?

Yes – but that doesn't necessarily mean the matter ends there.

There are plenty of reasons why someone might decide not to leave part of their estate to a particular person. Sometimes relationships have broken down. Sometimes substantial financial help has already been given during someone's lifetime. Sometimes the decision is simply about where the person wants their money to go.

Whatever the reason, deliberately excluding someone from a Will deserves careful thought and proper planning.

We've written a new article looking at Will exclusion, the potential for claims against an estate and why documenting your intentions can be important.

Parents: when did you last review your Will?

Before the children arrived?

When they were babies?

So long ago that you're not entirely sure what's actually in it?

Family circumstances change. Children grow up, relationships change, finances change and the people you chose for important roles years ago may no longer be the people you'd choose today.

A Will shouldn't necessarily be something you write once and then forget about for the next 30 years.

If yours hasn't been looked at for a while, perhaps it's time to dig it out and have another read.

And if you need some help reviewing it, we're here.

If you own your home with somebody else, do you know what would happen to your share if you died?

A lot depends on whether you own the property as **Joint Tenants** or **Tenants in Common**.

With Joint Tenants, the deceased owner's interest will normally pass automatically to the surviving owner.

With Tenants in Common, the deceased person's share can instead pass under their Will.

It is an important distinction, particularly for unmarried couples, blended families and anyone who wants their share of a property to eventually pass to their children.

We've explained the difference, what happens to the mortgage, and how your property ownership needs to work alongside your Will in our latest article.

Read it here:

What happens to a jointly owned home when one owner dies? We explain the difference between Joint Tenants and Tenants in Common, and why your property ownership needs to work alongside your Will.
