Delighted to share that I’ve been elected as one of the trustees/directors of CMSUK. I’m excited to work alongside like-minded professionals to champion ongoing support for case managers and promote effective, person-centred case management for our clients.

What Does Independence Really Mean?

I met Luke three months ago. He told me, "I just want to make my own cup of tea again."

Not climb mountains. Not run marathons. Just tea.

After his accident, well-meaning people kept telling him what independence *should* look like. Mobility goals. Therapy schedules. Milestones on a chart.

But Luke? He wanted to wake up on a Sunday morning and make tea in his own kitchen, in his own time, without asking for help.
Here's what I've learned after years in case management:

Independence isn't one-size-fits-all.

For James, it meant keeping his dogs, Max and Bella, even when everyone said it was "impractical."

For Michael, it was returning to his woodworking shed, even if just for 20 minutes a day.

For Luke, it was that cup of tea.

We all depend on something.Family. Carers. Technology. Community. The question isn't whether we're dependent—it's whether we have the *choice* in how we live.

At NJ Case Management, we don't impose a definition of independence on our clients. We ask: What does it mean to you?

Then we work backwards from there—with realistic, holistic solutions that honour what truly matters.

Because independence isn't about doing everything alone.

It's about having the dignity to live life on your own terms.
