Investment has been given to a meditation scheme designed to help estrange families settle disputes around financial matters and child contact.
The funding has been announced to help divert private law cases from court and enable families to settle disputes out of court. The mediation scheme was launched in March last year and the £1.3m investment will take funding of the scheme to more than £3m.
The scheme has already issued 4,400 family mediation vouchers to help resolve disputes such as those involving financial or contact arrangements for children. The additional funding will enable 2,440 additional vouchers for mediation services each worth £500 to be distributed with the aim of finding amicable solutions to couples’ disagreements and freeing up space in the family courts. It seeks to spare them going through often lengthy and costly courtroom battles, which can have a damaging impact on their children.
Family mediation is a process in which an independent, professionally trained mediator helps parties work out arrangements for children and finances where there is a dispute. The mediator is not there to tell each side what to do, but can help them reach an agreement while trying to improve communication between them. Its not marriage guidance and they aren’t there to try and keep couples together but help them find a practical way forward after a relationship has broken down.
The additional money should be able to take the initiative to the end of March.
Whilst I am not a mediator - preferring to be a litigator - if mediation doesn't produce a successful outcome such that court cannot be avoided - i'll fight your corner.

Only 15% of divorcing couples include pensions in their financial settlement, according to a survey of Which? members carried out in November 2021.
Pensions are usually the single biggest asset for divorcing couples and make up 42% of total household wealth, according to the Office for National Statistics. By comparison, the share of wealth held in property is 36%.
Pension wealth is very unequally distributed among married men and women. A new study by the University of Manchester shows the average married woman aged between 65-69 has just £28,000 in pension wealth – whereas the average man has almost ten times that.
Splitting pensions can be a daunting task, usually requiring the guidance of a solicitor and financial advisor.
At the very least discuss pensions, so if you decide not to seek a share you know, at the very least, what you are giving up.

Pensions are frequently left out of divorce settlements, Which? research finds, meaning women lose out.
