There is still a reluctance to take action despite the fact that an estimated 300,000 active duty and former military members may have acquired hearing loss and/or tinnitus as a result of negligence. The mindset that prevails seems to be that being exposed to noise is and was "just part of the work." While this is somewhat true—there are times when noisy situations are simply unavoidable—this is not the case while training or when the MOD tests the noise levels of equipment or vehicles. Hearing loss should never be discounted. Hearing loss can limit military jobs and have an effect on post-service civilian career options, so it's not always just a matter of missing conversations or having the TV on too loud. The effects, as well as the amounts of compensation given, can be substantial even in cases of less severe military deafness.
