As is customary – although perhaps not this early in the year, which is maybe indicative of the Federal Election being called imminently – Australia’s Immigration Minister has capped the number of parent visas that can be granted by the Department of Home Affairs in the program year, which for 2024_25 ends on 30 June 2025.

Parent visa numbers have been capped for the year ended 30 June 2025.

The latest data set has now been added to the Go Matilda Parent Visas calculator, which can be accessed here: https://www.gm-parent-visas.com/visa-processing-time-calculator/

As the preparation of the calculator involves costs (we have to pay the Department for the raw data, which then needs to be turned into a spreadsheet and input to the back end behind the website) we are considering ways of recovering these costs.

This might be by introducing a charge for all who aren't clients of Go Matilda Visas to access the calculator, or requesting names and email addresses so we can send information about our trusted associates and from whom we receive introducer fees.

The deadline for appointing a registered tax agent and securing an extension of the 31st October 2023 for filing your personal 2023 Australian tax return is now only 5 weeks away.

If you want more time to prepare and submit your 2023 Australian tax return you should be on a registered tax agent's lodgment program by the end of October 2023.

Today we're looking at business skills visas.

The details we have from the Department of Home Affairs indicates there are nearly 20,000 applications for subclass 188 provisional visas, of which 14,000 are applications made by business owners.

In the case of the 14,000 applications made by business owners these are applications made by individuals who are required to set up or acquire a business in Australia and to run it for at least 2 years before they apply for permanent residency under subclass 888.

Being business owners the applicants are - as a rule - entrepreneurial, risk takers, and employers of Australian citizens and permanent residents.

So what does the Australian Government do in response to these applicants?

It reduces the number of visas to be granted in the program year to 30 June 2024 to 1,900 from 5,000 - meaning some applications will take nearly 10 years to be granted.

Is this the message we want to send to risk taking business owners who want to move to Australia? Surely not!
