Most managers we speak to aren't worried about the absence policy. They're worried about the conversation.

How often to check in without it feeling like pressure. What to say in a review meeting. When to suggest occupational health without sounding like you're pushing someone out.

Long-term sickness absence is rarely straightforward, but a clear and supportive process makes the difference between a good return to work and a drawn-out, stressful one for everyone involved.

Sophie Harvey's latest blog covers the practical detail: communication, reasonable adjustments, return-to-work plans, and what fairness looks like at each stage.

Worth a read whether you've got an active case on your desk or you want to sense-check your current approach: https://viewhr.co.uk/managin-long-term-sickness/

Most poor managers aren't bad people. They're people who've been promoted into a role no one trained them for.

New research from Unmind has a name for it: "accidental bosses."

Two thirds of UK employees say they've left or considered leaving a job because of poor management. And while 83% of managers say they've had formal leadership training, only 63% of their employees agree.

The gap usually isn't about willingness. It's about what people were given the chance to learn before being handed the responsibility.

The good news is this is fixable. Practical training in the skills that actually matter day to day, from holding fair performance conversations to taking proper notes in formal meetings, can change how a team experiences their manager.

If you'd like to talk about supporting your managers properly, we'd love to help.

Millie spent her work experience week with us this month, and before she headed back to sixth form we asked her to write a blog on what she'd made of it all.

The result is genuinely lovely. An honest, thoughtful take on what HR is and why it matters, written by someone who's about to step into the workplace for the first time.

Her list of what HR should mean for young people starting out is a good reminder for the rest of us.

A huge thank you to Millie for being such a brilliant addition to the team while she was here. We hope this is just the start.

Notetaking deserves more credit than it gets.

It's the skill that quietly holds an HR process together, and it's often handed to whoever's free on the day.
In her latest blog, Becki Hanford shares what really matters when you're taking notes in formal HR meetings, from investigations to grievances. She also looks at where recorded meetings and transcription tools have a place, and where they don't.

Read it here: https://viewhr.co.uk/art-of-notetaking/

If you'd like hands-on training, our open online notetaking course is now open for bookings:

Great managers don't just happen. They're developed.

We run in-person training sessions covering the full range from Line Manager Training to Equality, Diversity, Neurodiversity and Inclusion, giving your leaders the tools they actually need to do their jobs well.

We recently joined the team at Decorum Vending for a great training session also including Microft Excel Training to help them handle everyday tasks independently and feel more confident engaging with data-driven decisions. πŸš€

Mental Health Awareness Week is coming to an end.

The conversations this week have been worth having. But the real test isn't what gets posted β€” it's what happens on an ordinary working day, when there's no campaign running and someone on your team is quietly not okay.

That's when your culture shows.

If this week prompted you to look at what support you actually have in place, good. If it didn't, there's still time. A mental health policy, trained first aiders, and managers who know how to have the hard conversations β€” none of that needs a awareness week to exist.

We're here year-round if you need support building something that lasts.

Two practical online sessions running with us this June, both designed to give you something genuinely useful by the time you log off.

On Tuesday 9 June, it's TUPE Made Practical, 10:00am to 1:00pm. Three hours covering when TUPE applies, who's responsible for what, the mistakes we see most often, and how to handle transfers without losing sleep over them.

Book here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/tupe-made-practical-tickets-1988011577143

Then on Wednesday 24 June, we're running Practical Note-Taking from 10:00am to 2:30pm (with a 30-minute break). Good notes are harder than they look. We'll cover what to capture, how to stay objective, what to leave out, and the techniques our team uses every day.

Book here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/practical-note-taking-tickets-1988317299567

Early bird and group rates on both. Aimed at HR professionals, line managers, and anyone who finds themselves taking notes in tricky meetings.

Mental Health Awareness Week is a good thing. Talking openly about mental health at work matters, and awareness does shift culture over time.

But awareness on its own isn't enough.

When someone on your team is struggling, they don't need a campaign β€” they need to know what support is available, who to talk to, and that doing so won't go against them. That requires preparation, not just good intentions.

Some questions worth asking this week:

πŸ’‘ Do your managers know how to have a supportive conversation?
πŸ’‘ Does your team know what help exists?
πŸ’‘ Is your mental health policy up to date and actually communicated?

If the answer to any of those is unclear, that's where to start.

We work with employers to build the policies, training, and confidence that make a real difference.

Your recruitment process might be filtering out some of your strongest candidates β€” and you'd never know.

Neurodiverse applicants can bring exceptional skills and perspectives to a team. But if your hiring process wasn't designed with them in mind, they may never get the chance to show it.

Following Neurodiversity Celebration Week, Senior HR Consultant Joanne Hatch shares what inclusive recruitment actually looks like in practice and the small changes that make a real difference.
