A great couple of days spent learning about traditional hot mixed lime mortars on a course hosted by Nigel Copsey.
This video shows the start of a dry slake, where quicklime, aggregate and water react to create a hot mixed mortar.
It's fascinating to see traditional methods that have been used for centuries in the construction and repair of historic buildings still being used today.
After completing the course, one thing that really stood out to me was how practical hot lime can be. Before attending, I expected it to be much slower and more labour intensive than NHL mortars. In reality, I was surprised by how comparable the process can be.
A big thank you to Nigel Copsey for sharing his knowledge and experience. No matter how long you've been in the trade, there's always something new to learn.
I'm looking forward to putting some of what I've learnt into practice on future heritage and conservation projects.
Have you worked with hot lime mortar before?
