📢 Trusts Explained: What They Are And What Trustees Need To Know

Trusts play an important role in helping individuals and families protect assets, support loved ones and plan for the future. However, anyone acting as a trustee takes on significant responsibilities, and misunderstanding those duties can create unnecessary legal, financial and administrative risks.

As families increasingly look for flexible ways to manage wealth, provide for vulnerable beneficiaries and safeguard assets for future generations, understanding how trusts work has never been more important. Trustees need to be confident that decisions are being made correctly and in line with their legal obligations.

In this article, Dan Pinder explores:

• ⚖️ What a trust is and the role trustees play in managing assets for beneficiaries.
• 💡 The key differences between common types of trusts and when they may be used.
• ✅ Practical steps trustees can take to manage trusts effectively and stay compliant.
• 🔍 Common mistakes that can lead to difficulties, disputes or governance issues.
• 📊 The importance of record keeping, communication and reviewing trust arrangements regularly.
• 🚦 When trustees should seek professional advice to support important decisions.

Trusts can provide valuable protection and flexibility, but they work best when trustees understand their responsibilities and keep arrangements under regular review. Taking the time to understand the role can help protect beneficiaries, preserve assets and support better decision-making over the long term.

📢 Buying Property With Friends Or A Sibling | A Legal Guide

Getting onto the property ladder remains a challenge for many people, leading more friends and siblings to consider buying together. While shared ownership can make property purchases more accessible, it can also create legal and financial complications if expectations, contributions and future plans are not agreed from the outset.

Recent figures highlighted in this article suggest joint property ownership between people outside a romantic relationship is becoming more common. As these arrangements increase, having the right legal protections in place is more important than ever to help avoid disputes and protect everyone involved.

In this article, Gareth Jones explores:

• 🏡 How to structure ownership arrangements to reflect each person’s contribution and intentions.
• ⚖️ The importance of documenting ownership shares and financial commitments from the outset.
• 💡 Practical ways to manage mortgage payments, household costs and future property improvements.
• 🚦 Key considerations if one owner wants to sell, move out or buy the other out.
• ✅ Why Wills, written agreements and other legal protections should form part of the planning process.
• 🔍 Common areas where disputes arise and how early planning can help avoid them.

Buying a property with a friend or sibling can be a practical solution, but it should be treated as a long-term legal and financial partnership. Taking advice early can help provide clarity, reduce risk and protect relationships if circumstances change.

Recognition is always welcome. Progress is even more meaningful.

This year's Legal 500 UK 2027 rankings mark an important milestone for Napthens, with a new Top Tier ranking for Commercial Litigation in the north west, alongside new individual recognitions for Robert Dobson as a Leading Partner and Craig Whittingham as a Leading Associate. Together with four Top Tier rankings across the firm, these achievements reflect the continued strength, depth and evolution of our teams.

While rankings provide an important benchmark, they are ultimately a reflection of something more significant: the trust our clients place in us, the quality of our people and the impact of the advice we provide every day. Recognition of this kind is built over many years through collaboration, expertise and a commitment to delivering outstanding client service in the north west and beyond.

Alongside our new recognitions, we're proud to celebrate those who have maintained their status among the leading lawyers in their fields:

Leading Partners
• Andrew Holden
• John Whittingslow
• Robert Dobson
• Jon Esner
• Keith Melling
• Jamie Allison
• Martin Beardsworth
• David Hill
• Kieran Donovan

Leading Associates

Congratulations to everyone recognised this year and thank you to the clients and contacts who took the time to provide feedback as part of the Legal 500 research process. Your support and trust continue to drive us forward.
