What if your circumstances didn't have to set the limits on your career?

For Zoe Turner, consultancy meant she didn't have to choose between being there for her family and building the career she wanted.

It's given her the freedom to build something of her own, keep progressing and take her career further than she ever imagined.

Could consultancy be the next step in your legal career?

We're always interested in hearing from experienced lawyers and legal professionals who are looking for a different way of working.

Employment Law: What Employers Actually Need to Know

Employment law questions don't wait for a convenient moment; they tend to show up right when you're trying to hire, let someone go, or tighten up your paperwork.

In this carousel, Employment Law Consultant Solicitor Richard Hiron breaks down the questions we're hearing most from SME owners and HR teams right now:

What should you do if you're offered a settlement agreement?
Do you actually need a written contract for staff?
What should go in a staff handbook, and is it a legal requirement?
Are restrictive covenants enforceable?
What's the real difference between an employee and a self-employed contractor?

From contracts and handbooks to covenants and worker status, swipe through to see what they could mean for your business.

"Using a letting agent means I don't have to give my tenant my name and address."

Is something landlords sometimes assume, but unfortunately this stance can land you in unwanted legal trouble.

Even where an agent manages the property day to day, the tenant's right to know who their landlord is doesn't go away. Under the Landlord and Tenant Act 1985, a tenant can formally request this information from the agent, and the law expects a proper response, not a shrug.

Landlord & Tenant specialist Anna Hughes previously broke down why this happens and how to protect yourself:

Respond to written requests for your name and address within 21 days
Make sure your agent knows to pass these requests on promptly
Keep your correspondence address on file and ready to send

This is just one of the landlord duties we see overlooked time and time again, and if you want to find out more, read the full insight here: https://www.woodstocklegalservices.co.uk/the-right-to-know-your-landlord

New rules are coming for landlords in England.

From 15 December 2026, a new national landlord register will begin rolling out region by region under the Renters' Rights Act 2025.

Landlords will need to register themselves and each rental property, pay an annual £65 fee, and keep compliance documents up to date, with penalties of up to £40,000 for getting it wrong.

The rollout starts in the West Midlands and works through to the South West by August 2027, so knowing your region's deadline matters.

Consultant Solicitor Zoe Turner, breaks down exactly who needs to register, what information you'll need, and what to do now to prepare.

What if your career could fit around the moments that matter most?

For Charlotte Davitt, consultancy means choosing her own working hours so she can spend more time with her children, attend school events and be present during the school holidays. It also gives her greater control over the type of work she takes on helping her achieve a better balance between her professional and personal life.

It's Feedback Friday and this one goes to Katie Hunt! 👏

Buying your first home is a big milestone and it's completely natural to feel nervous about choosing the right solicitor, especially when you've heard mixed stories from friends and family.

This client was recommended to Katie by their estate agent and praised her excellent communication, thoroughness and professionalism throughout their first home purchase.

We're so pleased Katie helped turn those early nerves into a really positive experience and even more pleased to hear they'll be coming back to her in the future!

That's a wrap on our National Landlord Investment Show! 🎉

Yesterday we were at Bristol Ashton Gate with landlords, letting agents and property professionals for a day focused on the issues shaping the private rented sector.

Thank you to everyone who came along! Here are the highlights of our day:

Zoe Turner joining the panel "The Renters' Rights Act Is in Force and There's a New Prime Minister: What Now for Landlords and the Private Rented Sector?", sharing her insight on what comes next for the sector.

Sharfaa Kerkache and Leo Aiken delivering Renters' Rights Act training, breaking down the changes in practice and what landlords and agents need to know.

Our two free legal clinics, where our specialist solicitors answered your questions one to one.

And of course, lots of great conversations on the stand throughout the day.

A big thank you to the NLIS team for another brilliant show and to everyone who stopped by to see us. We're already looking forward to the next one!

This week, we asked Iftakhar Ahmed how long it usually takes to exchange contracts once the source of funds has been confirmed.

Iftakhar Ahmed, Residential Property Consultant Solicitor, explains why there isn’t always a straightforward answer and what still needs to happen before you’re ready to exchange, from searches and enquiries to legal checks and mortgage requirements.

While exchange can often happen within a few days once everything is in place, unexpected issues or outstanding information can sometimes cause delays.
