Vettings are like marmite. You either love them or you hate them.
I always advise clients to have horses vetted regardless of the price of the horse. And my top tip is that you should always attend the vetting if you can. You then get to see everything the vet does and take in all the findings as the vetting progresses. If you are a seller, insist that your horse is vetted as the vetting often protects the seller as much as the buyer. Buying a horse. Another red flag to look out for ….
Selling agents are very common in facilitating the sale of a horse. In law, the sales agent very much hides behind the owner who is the principal to the contract (the person you are contracting with/buying from). It is therefore essential that you meet with or at least speak to the horse owner before you buy the horse. If the sales agent will not disclose who the owner is or allow you to meet/speak with the owner, walk away. The point is that the owner has far more knowledge about the horse having owned it whereas the sales agent has most likely only had the horse for a short period of time. Red flags to look out for when buying a horse or pony. Part one. 🚩 number 1 - if the seller tells you that the horse passed a vetting recently but the buyer pulled out for some reason. In this case insist on seeing the vetting certificate or speaking to the potential buyer. In both cases I have at the moment where this has happened the horse in fact failed the vetting, was medicated and then purchased without another vetting and without the seller disclosing the medication or lameness. If the seller refuses to tell you who the potential buyer was, walk away.

Please have horseboxes safety checked before you buy. I see so many poor horses injured in poorly constructed horse boxes. Nobody regulates coach-builders and it is causing much suffering. Let’s work together to change this. Share with your horsey friends to raise awareness.
