Making a Will helps you take care of your family's future. However, a formal Will may not leave room for personal touches, such as explaining why you want a particular family heirloom to go to someone specific or sharing everyday wisdom about how you'd like your children raised.

Confidential ‘side letters’ (such as a Memorandum of Wishes or a Letter of Guidance) can bridge that gap. Kept alongside your Will, they allow you to keep your personal reasoning private while giving your executors clear, practical guidance.

But how do they work in practice?

Over 3.5 million couples live together in England and Wales without marrying, but "common-law marriage" does not exist in English law.

Proposed legal reforms could eventually give cohabiting couples automatic inheritance rights, but waiting for new laws leaves your home and assets unprotected today.

From holding property deeds correctly to putting a valid Will in place, taking control now removes tomorrow's uncertainty.
