Bursary alert 🚨

FirstGens has teamed up with leading global law firm A&O Shearman to offer bursaries worth £15,000 each to first-generation students.

You’re considered first-generation if your parent(s) or guardian(s) did not complete a university degree. You can still be first-generation if your siblings or extended family attended university.

You could be eligible to apply if you’re starting your first year of university September 2026, studying law or a non-law subject, and curious about a career in law.

Successful applicants will receive £15,000, paid as £5,000 per year over three years, which does not need to be repaid, alongside:

🤝 Support from a dedicated A&O Shearman professional throughout their degree

We're delighted to share that Associate Professor Liz Curran has been promoted to Professor.

Throughout her career, Professor Curran has championed access to justice, working to reduce inequality and improve outcomes for people and communities who too often experience social exclusion.

As Professor, she will continue to lead impactful research and evaluation that makes a tangible difference in people's lives.

Looking ahead, she shares: “I will use the connection between research and practice to shape relevant and engaging teaching with colleagues, helping our NTU students develop the skills they need for legal practice, policy work, problem-solving and a wide range of other careers.”

🎉 Congratulations to Emma McGowan on qualifying as a Solicitor 🎉

Emma McGowan joined NLS Legal in September 2020 as a supervising caseworker for our welfare benefits and housing law services.

Since then, Emma has successfully completed her LPC and SQE 2, and she was admitted to the Roll of solicitors on 17th June 2026.

We are very proud of Emma and all of her hard work, and delighted that she continues to work with us as a supervising solicitor at NLS Legal, continuing her excellent work in social justice.

📢 Summer Work Experience Opportunity for NLS Students

Looking to build practical legal skills while making a real difference?

National charity Support Through Court is seeking student volunteers from July to September 2026.

As a volunteer, you'll support people navigating the civil and family courts without legal representation, while gaining valuable experience in:
• Client communication and interviewing
• Legal research
• Court forms and procedures
• Professional confidence and problem-solving
• Understanding the legal system and court processes

They are asking for a commitment of one day per week, with full in-person training provided. There may also be opportunities for remote volunteering once training is completed.

To apply, submit your application via the NTU NOW Learning Room (Support Through Court).

We are delighted to share that Jenny Chapman, Executive Dean of Nottingham Law School, has been promoted to Professor.

This is a wonderful and richly deserved recognition of Jenny’s outstanding contribution to legal education, academic leadership and the development of Nottingham Law School over three decades.

Jenny shared: “I am delighted to be joining the professoriate at NTU. It is a privilege to work for such an amazing university and that my strategic leadership in enhancing our student’s education and opportunities has been recognised in this way”

Throughout her career, Jenny has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to students, colleagues, the legal profession, and access to justice. She has played a pivotal role in shaping the distinctive identity and reputation of Nottingham Law School, helping to strengthen its impact both within the university and across the wider legal sector.

In particular, Jenny’s leadership was instrumental in the transformation of NLS Legal into a fully regulated law firm, creating exceptional opportunities for students while expanding access to legal services.

Congratulations, Professor Chapman, on this well-deserved achievement!
