When a couple divorces, the legal end of the marriage is only one part of the picture.

Sorting out finances is the other - and it is often the part that has the biggest long-term impact.

A financial settlement formally divides assets, debts, pensions, and ongoing financial responsibilities. Without one, your ex-partner could potentially make a financial claim against you years down the line, even after the divorce is finalised.

Swipe through our guide to understand what financial settlements involve and why they matter.

"Can I keep my house after divorce?"

It is one of the most common questions our Family Law team is asked, and the honest answer is: it depends.

When a couple separates, the family home is usually one of the most significant assets to consider. The court looks at a range of factors including the financial position of both parties, the needs of any children, and what is fair in the circumstances.

There are several possible outcomes:

- One person buys out the other's share
- The home is sold and the proceeds divided
- The home is retained for a set period (often until children are older), then sold

Every situation is different, and the right outcome depends on the wider financial picture.

Our Family team can talk you though your options clearly and calmly with a free initial discussion.

If your employer has asked you to sign a Settlement Agreement, the first thing to know is this: you do not have to figure it out alone.

Settlement Agreements are legally binding documents that typically bring your employment to an end in exchange for a financial payment. Before the agreement becomes valid, you are legally required to take independent legal advice - and in most cases, your employer will cover the cost of that advice.

So what should you be checking before you sign?

- Is the financial offer fair given your circumstances?
- Are any restrictive covenants reasonable?
- Are your references and exit arrangements clear?
- Have all outstanding pay, bonuses, or benefits been included?

Our Employment Law team provides clear, practical advice so you can make an informed decision.

Your employer will usually contribute towards or cover the cost of that advice. https://www.poolealcock.co.uk/personal/employment/settlement-agreements/

Helen's calm, clear approach is something our clients come back to us on again and again - and feedback like this is a reminder of why that matters so much.

This role is perfect for someone who enjoys the work itself — building relationships, supporting clients through difficult situations, and delivering a high standard of care — but wants to do it in the right environment.

📢 We are hiring a Client Relationship Manager 📢

As Poole Alcock continues to grow, we are looking for a Client Relationship Manager to join our team.

This is an office based role out of our Head Office in Northwich, Cheshire, CW9 7RA.

This is not a typical client relationship role. With responsibility for the client offboarding journey, you will build relationships with clients at the end of their matter, gather feedback and reviews, identify opportunities for repeat business, and support internal referrals and future legal service needs.

Effective client offboarding is key to delivering a positive final impression, strengthening long-term relationships and supporting future business.

This role has a clear sales and business development focus, making it ideal for someone who combines excellent client care with commercial awareness and a passion for helping to retain and grow our client base.

You will also be joining a new and developing function within the firm, with real scope to make an impact, support our continued growth, and reflect our Committed to Excellence values in every client interaction.

If that sounds like you, we would love to hear from you. For full details visit:- https://www.poolealcock.co.uk/careers/

Closing date: 31st May 2026
Please send your CV and a covering letter telling us why this role is right for you.

Many people are surprised to learn that grandparents do not have an automatic legal right to see their grandchildren.

If contact has been disrupted - whether through family breakdown, divorce, or a disagreement with a parent - it can feel devastating. But there are steps you can take.

In many cases, the first step is attempting mediation or family discussions. If that isn't possible, grandparents can apply to the court for a Child Arrangements Order, which can formalise contact arrangements.

Every situation is different, and the right approach will depend on the circumstances involved.

Our Family Law team is here to help you understand your options and take the right next steps.
