It's always so lovely to receive a handwritten card from a client and todays included such lovely words in this note;

"Thank you so much for all your advice and help in the preparation of my Will.

You made the whole process easy to follow and explained everything in simple terms so that I understood all the details. Kelly made me feel welcome and comfortable whilst waiting for our meetings.

I look forward to potentially returning to update my Will in the future."

We are really lucky to have such thoughtful clients and it really is a pleasure so support them with their estate planning.

The phrase "Bank of Mum and Dad" has been around for years.
But this week's news suggests it's increasingly becoming the "Bank of Grandparents."

More grandparents are dipping into their savings to help children and grandchildren buy their first home, pay university costs or simply get ahead in life.

Most people don't spend years building up their wealth just to see a bigger bank balance. They do it to help the people they love.
But it does raise an important question...
If you're making significant gifts during your lifetime,

πŸ’‘Have you stopped to think about how they fit into your overall estate plan?
πŸ’‘Could they affect the balance between your children?
πŸ’‘Should they be taken into account in your Will?
πŸ’‘Have you recorded your intentions so your family understands why you've made those decisions?
πŸ’‘And are your Lasting Powers of Attorney up to date if you're making larger financial decisions later in life?

Estate planning isn't just about what happens after we're gone.
It's about making thoughtful decisions throughout our lifetime and making sure everything joins up.

Helping your family today and protecting them tomorrow should go hand in hand.

As estate planners, we often talk about the importance of putting Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) in place before they're needed.

But sometimes it's the personal stories that remind us why this work matters so much.

One of our estate planners Beneficial Family Wills - Debbie Koziol, has shared her family's experience of supporting both of her parents through dementia. It's an honest and heartfelt account of the challenges families face and how having LPAs in place made such a significant difference during an incredibly difficult time.

Too often, people believe LPAs are something to think about "later". The reality is that by the time they're needed, it may already be too late to put them in place. An LPA isn't just a legal document – it's a way of ensuring the people you trust can make important decisions on your behalf if you're no longer able to.

Debbie's story is a powerful reminder that future planning isn't about expecting the worst. It's about making life a little easier for the people you love when they need it most.

I highly recommend taking a few minutes to read her blog. If it encourages even one family to have the conversation sooner rather than later, it will have been worth sharing.

Bought a house, had a baby, or got married? Your Will needs an update.

Life changes quickly. A Will written five years ago might not reflect your life today. Major milestones like buying a home, getting married, having children, or going through a divorce can completely change your legal and financial situation.

For example, did you know that in England and Wales, marriage automatically revokes an existing Will? If you don't update it, your estate could be distributed under intestacy rules instead of your wishes.

We recommend reviewing your Will every 3 to 5 years to make sure it still protects the people you love.

Is your Will up to date? Contact us today for a quick review of your existing documents.

Should you get married to save Inheritance Tax? The financial reality for cohabiting couples.

In the UK, cohabiting couples are the fastest-growing family type, with over 3.6 million couples living together unmarried. However, under UK tax law, cohabiting couples do not enjoy the same Inheritance Tax (IHT) exemptions as married couples or civil partners. When a spouse passes away, they can leave their entire estate to their partner completely tax-free. Unmarried couples do not have this allowance, which can lead to unexpected tax bills of tens of thousands of pounds.

Understanding your options is vital to protecting your partner from a sudden financial burden.

Unmarried and cohabiting? Let's make sure your partner is protected. Send us a message to discuss your options.

What is a Discretionary Trust, and how does it protect your family's inheritance?

A Discretionary Trust is one of the most flexible and powerful tools in estate planning. Instead of leaving your assets directly to your beneficiaries, you leave them to a trust managed by people you choose (trustees).

The trustees have the discretion to decide how and when to distribute the assets to your beneficiaries. This is incredibly useful if you want to protect funds from a beneficiary's potential divorce, bankruptcy, or financial instability, or if you want to support a vulnerable family member without affecting their state benefits.

Discover how a Discretionary Trust can bring peace of mind to your family. Contact our friendly team today.
