How long does divorce take in Northern Ireland?

The absolute minimum is around six to eight months, but it often takes longer.

Once you lodge your petition, a decree nisi can take around six months, followed by a further six weeks and one day before you can apply for the final order.

Delays usually come from agreeing finances, the family home, and child arrangements rather than the divorce itself.

Getting legal advice early and agreeing key issues before proceedings helps speed things up.

What are restrictive covenants in Northern Ireland property?

They’re legal restrictions in your title deeds that can stop you from doing things like extending, running a business from home, parking commercial vehicles, building structures, adding solar panels, and more.

They bind future owners too. Even old covenants still matter; not being enforced for years doesn’t make them disappear.

If you breach one, you could face a court injunction to undo work and pay damages.

Tell your solicitor upfront what you plan to do with the property so they can flag any restrictions before you buy.

Who gets the pets in a divorce in Northern Ireland?

Legally, pets are treated as property, not dependants, so the court looks at who owned them before the relationship, whose name is on the microchip, and who cared for them day-to-day.

You can agree on shared arrangements between yourselves and put it in writing through a separation agreement.

If it goes to court, one person gets the pet. The best approach is to agree on this yourselves, between your solicitors, rather than fighting in court.
