Why laser clean an engine instead of blasting it?

The main advantage of laser cleaning is that it leaves no abrasive media or solid contaminants behind inside the engine. With blasting methods, there is always a risk that particles of shot, grit or other blasting media can remain trapped within the engine, even after thorough cleaning.

If just one piece of abrasive material is left behind and enters the oil system, it can circulate through the engine and cause premature wear or damage to critical components. This is a real risk if the seller or long term user is keeping the vehicle.

What finish does laser cleaning leave?
The finish depends on the type of laser used:

✅ Continuous-wave lasers typically leave a matt finish. They are designed to remove heavy contamination, coatings and corrosion efficiently.

✅ Pulsed lasers generally leave a brighter, more polished finish on engine components. Because they operate with lower heat input, they offer greater control and can produce a cleaner cosmetic finish while still removing contaminants effectively.

Attached is a clip from a recent project, cleaning components destined for a rebuild.

ISR recently carried out laser cleaning on a 1967 VW Beetle, stripping the affected areas back to bare metal so the vehicle could be fully assessed before welding and painting.

The process revealed the true extent of the work required without causing further damage. Unlike traditional blasting methods, laser cleaning leaves no dust, debris or residual media behind, providing a clean surface ready for the next stage of restoration.

Bringing Engineering Systems Back to Life with Precision Laser Cleaning

ISR recently completed a specialist cleaning project inside a mill, removing baked‑on heating oil and lubricant from production rollers. With only a limited power supply available on site, we adapted our process and— for the first time— used a targeted chemical pre‑treatment to enhance laser performance. A valuable lesson learned, and a demonstration of how flexible laser cleaning can be when conditions are challenging.

A great milestone for ISR this week — we’ve begun restoring a Ford Model T 4‑splash sump pan. Laser cleaning delivered a safe, precise solution that protected both the original steel and every brass seal, avoiding the costly rework blasting would have created. When parts are this rare, precision matters.

Ceased Parts Recovery Without Disassembly
ISR’s laser systems enable ceased‑parts recovery without full disassembly, a capability that conventional recovery methods simply cannot match.
