When things get tough, it’s easy to think that a courtroom is the only way to settle a separation. But for most couples, that’s just not the case. You can actually sort out your money and your kids' future without the massive legal bills, the stress, or the long wait for a court date.

Get the Facts, Minus the Jargon
We’ve put together the UK Separation Roadmap to show you there’s a better way. It’s a straightforward, 2025-updated guide written specifically for people in England and Wales. It covers:

• How mediation actually works (it’s simpler than you think).
• The big stuff you need to decide on, like the house and parenting.
• How to keep things calm so you can make decisions you’re both okay with.

Many people assume mediation only works if both parties get along.

That is not true.

There are different models of mediation designed to support a range of situations, including high-conflict cases. For example:

• Shuttle mediation, where you are in separate rooms
• Hybrid mediation, where lawyers can be involved
• Child-inclusive mediation, where children’s voices can be safely heard

Mediation is flexible and can be tailored to your needs. The key question is not whether things are difficult. It is whether there is enough willingness to explore solutions in a structured and supported way.

A MIAM is where you can discuss these options and find out what might work best in your situation.

You may have heard that attending a MIAM is just something you “have to do” before going to court.

In reality, it is much more than that.

A MIAM is a valuable, one-to-one meeting where you can:

• Share your concerns in a safe environment
• Ask questions about your legal and practical options
• Explore different ways to resolve issues outside of court
• Understand whether mediation could work for you

It is completely confidential and voluntary. Even if mediation is not right for your case, you will leave better informed about what to do next.

Court is not the only way forward. Taking the time to explore your options can save emotional and financial strain later.

Thinking about separation, but not sure what happens next?

A MIAM, which stands for Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting, is often the first step. It is a private, confidential meeting with a trained family mediator where you can talk through your situation, your concerns, and your options.

It is not just about mediation. It is a space to understand all the available routes, including other non-court options. The mediator will also assess whether mediation is safe and suitable for your circumstances.

Many people arrive feeling overwhelmed. They leave feeling clearer, calmer, and better informed.

If you are unsure about your next step, a MIAM can give you the clarity you need to move forward with confidence.

Stop guessing what comes next.

Separation is hard enough without the "legal jargon" and "what-ifs" keeping you up at night. Most couples enter this process unprepared for the practical realities of parenting schedules and financial splits.

The good news? You don't have to figure it out by trial and error.

We’ve updated the UK Separation Roadmap for 2025 to give you a clear, step-by-step path forward. This free guide cuts through the noise to show you how to reach agreements in England and Wales, without the court dates or the astronomical legal fees.

Inside, we cover:

How to settle finances fairly.

Co-parenting structures that actually work.

Why court isn't your only (or best) option.

What if your kids could speak, without having to choose sides?

In the middle of a separation, we all think we know what our kids want. But often, they’re telling Mom one thing and Dad another just to keep the peace.

That’s where Child Inclusive Mediation (CIM) comes in. It’s what we call the "nugget of gold."

A specialist talks to the children privately. It’s 100% confidential; they decide what gets fed back to you. Usually, it’s one simple, powerful thing that changes the whole conversation.

The result? A parenting plan built on what they actually need, not just what the adults are fighting over.

"I can’t even look at them right now... how can we mediate?"

One of the biggest myths about mediation is that you have to sit across a mahogany table and make polite small talk with your ex.

Spoiler: You don’t.

If the tension is high (or the history is complicated), we use Shuttle Mediation or Hybrid Mediation.

Shuttle: You’re in separate rooms (or separate Zoom windows). I "shuttle" between you.

Hybrid: Your lawyers can sit in with you to provide that "legal safety net" in real-time.

You don’t need to be best friends to make a plan for your future. You just need a process that respects your boundaries.

Is the government actually giving away £500 for your separation?

Yes, really. If you’re navigating child arrangements, the Family Mediation Voucher Scheme has been extended through March 2026.

Most people think mediation is just an extra cost, but this voucher is designed to take the sting out of the bill. It’s not means-tested—it’s simply there to help you stay out of a courtroom.

Why it’s useful:

It covers up to £500 of your mediation sessions.

It’s a direct "thank you" for choosing a calmer route for your kids.

We handle the paperwork for you.

The catch? There isn't one, but the funds aren't infinite. If you’re already talking about "who gets the kids when," let’s see if we can get your sessions covered.

Facing separation and feeling unsure where to start?

For many couples, the hardest part is not the decision itself but working out what happens next.

Questions about children, money, and whether the court is unavoidable can feel overwhelming, especially when emotions are already running high.

The UK Separation Roadmap was created to bring clarity at this stage. It is a free, easy-to-follow guide for separating couples in England and Wales who want to understand their options and make informed decisions without rushing into costly or stressful court proceedings.

Updated for 2025, it explains the process in clear, plain English and helps you take the next steps with confidence and calm.

Trying to agree on child arrangements after separation can feel overwhelming. Joint mediation gives parents a safe, structured space to talk things through with the support of a trained mediator.

By the time you reach a joint session, you will already have had your individual MIAM meeting, and a clear plan will be in place. The focus then is on working together to create a co-parenting arrangement that supports your children now and in the future.

Most parenting plans are agreed upon within two to three joint sessions, and there is currently a government voucher that covers the cost of the first joint session.

If you are separating and want to stay out of court while keeping decisions about your children in your hands, mediation is a strong place to start.
