She started her legal career as a receptionist before working in the Wills and Probate Dept of another NE law firm. She moved to Beecham Peacock as a paralegal in 2024 and accepted a training contract in September.

Well done Sophie

Silicosis :- A Preventable Disease!

What is the risk to construction workers?

Silica is the biggest risk to construction workers after asbestos. Heavy and prolonged exposure to RCS can cause lung cancer and other serious respiratory diseases. HSE commissioned estimates it was responsible for the death of over 500 construction workers in 2005. In addition to the risks from lung cancer, silica is also linked to other serious lung diseases:

Silicosis can cause severe breathing problems and increases the risk of lung infections. Silicosis usually follows exposure to RCS over many years, but extremely high exposures can cause acute silicosis more quickly.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a group of lung diseases including bronchitis and emphysema. It results in severe breathlessness, prolonged coughing and chronic disability. It can be very disabling and is a leading cause of death. Around 4000 deaths are estimated annually due to COPD resulting from past workplace exposures in the past. Construction workers are a significant at risk group within this. Silica dust compared to a 1p coin
The amounts needed to cause this damage are not large. The most you should be inhaling during a day after using the right controls is shown next to the penny.

Asbestos has been found in play sand at a council-run nursery.
Tests on sand at Whitley Lodge in Whitley Bay, North Tyneside, found it to be contaminated with a type of asbestos called chrysotile, while Beacon Hill School in Wallsend has been closed for the rest of the week for more testing.
The government announcement on Wednesday it was aware some UK products contained "sand contaminated with asbestos" and they were being recalled by the businesses which sold them.

Today marks the start of Global Asbestos Awareness 🌍

Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous material which was regularly used in the building trade and is still found in many buildings, including factories, schools and hospitals.

There’s over 2,000 new mesothelioma cases diagnosed each year in the UK, so approximately 6 per day. Take a look at the graphics below showing common products that may contain asbestos in residential and industrial properties — and please share it to help spread awareness.
