Are you hoping to take your beloved pet abroad? Did you know it needs a passport? There are different rules for travelling with your pet to an EU country or Northern Ireland and for taking your pet to a non-EU country.
For more details go to https://www.gov.uk/taking-your-pet-abroad.
The official name is an “animal health certificate”. It needs to be signed by an “official veterinarian”, i.e. someone who is authorised to issue animal health certificates – not just your ordinary vet.
That certificate then may have to be legalised by the F.C.D.O. depending on the destination country; which is where we get involved.
Legalisation is confirmation that the signature on the pet passport is the genuine one of the vet.
A problem we are finding is that the vet has not had to have is certificate legalised before and has not sent a specimen signature to the F.C.D.O. to confirm what it looks like.
As pet passports have a short shelf life ( you need to travel within 96 hours of the Certificate being issued) and the owner usually has a flight booked, the absence of a specimen signature causes the pet owner, and us who are working to a deadline not a little grief.
So, firstly check that the vet who you approach is authorised to sign health certificates by the Department of Food and Rural Affairs, and secondly that he has previously sent a copy of his signature to the F.C.D.O.
If they have not then get them to write a short letter to the Legalisation Office on headed notepaper confirming their signature to the letter. This can then be emailed to [email protected]

How lovely to be getting enquiries regarding legalisation of Certificates of No Impediments and other supporting documentation.
The documents required may all be similar but the couples all have their own personal stories to tell which we absolutely love.

Getting married abroad this year?

Please do check your Certificate of No Impediment when you collect it from the Registrar's Office. We have had a couple of occasions when a name has been incorrectly printed on the form. If the names on the form are incorrect this may cause them to be rejected in the Country you are getting married. It will also cost you extra money to get a replacement legalised.

February is nearly upon us and with it comes enquiries from couples arranging their wedding abroad. To avoid the disappointment of failing to have the documents required ready at the appropriate time we would confirm the following.

There is only a window of beween three and six months leading up to the date of your wedding for you to obtain the necessary documents and where they will remain valid and in date.

Both parties usually need to obtain a "Certificate of No Impediment" from their local Registry Office. This will take a month. Once you have the Certificate, and depending on where you plan to marry the Certificate will only be valid for beween three and six months. Again this may vary from Country to Country .

It will not need notarising, but it will need legalising . (This is the part we can arrange)!

Our advice; do not plan to have the legal formalities in place either too early or too late, and always find out what those formalities are at your chosen wedding destination before you start planning.

Your wedding will be one of the most important and costly events you organise so planning and understanding the legal part of the process is key.

A Warning

A new client called today to say that he had spoken with The Legalisation Office helpline and was told that any documents submitted via the Postal Service will now not be dealt with until 2024.
He is using our Next Day Service! . If your document is urgent we strongly urge you not to submit documents by post to the FCDO direct.

We certainly get to see life through the papers we are asked to have legalised up the road at Hanslope Park. This week, so far, we are assisting a lady taking her cat to Egypt. We retained a sphinx like expression.

We have just been told we are "decent human beings" by a very happy client who has struggled to negotiate the minefield of getting documents legalised for use in Greece. His comments have made our day. I would rather be a "decent human being" than anything else at present. 😌
