Not every estate needs a solicitor. And for the ones that don't, paying thousands of pounds is simply unnecessary.

We built our DIY Probate Portal specifically for executors dealing with straightforward estates in England and Wales. It was designed by Jane Morris-Rowlinson, a probate solicitor with 23 years of experience, and it costs £39.99.

Inside the portal you get:
- Step-by-step guidance through the entire process
- Pre-written letter templates for banks and institutions
- Downloadable checklists and resources
- Inheritance tax guidance
- Professional support if you need it

Not sure whether you need a solicitor or not? Our free probate checker will tell you in under two minutes.

Something most probate guides don't tell you about bank thresholds.

Whether you need probate for a bank account depends entirely on the individual bank's internal policy, not any national rule.

Most High-street banks typically release up to around £50,000 without a Grant of Probate. Some are different. A handful will insist on a Grant regardless.

This means the exact same estate could require probate at Barclays but not at Lloyds.

I always tell families: contact each institution early, and do it individually. Their thresholds are not publicly advertised and they change without notice.

One more thing: if you notify a bank of a death and they ask for a Grant, that doesn't automatically mean the whole estate requires probate. It means that particular bank requires it for their accounts.

There's a lot more of this kind of practical detail in the guide I've linked below.

If you work with families dealing with estates, this is worth bookmarking.

One question I have answered more times than any other the year as a probate solicitor:

"Do I actually need probate?"

The honest answer? It depends. And getting it wrong in either direction costs families real money.

Get it wrong one way: you go through the entire application process for an estate that didn't need it.

Get it wrong the other way: you try to sell a property or close a bank account without a Grant, and everything grinds to a halt.

The three things that actually determine whether probate is required are:

1. The type of assets in the estate
2. The value of those assets
3. Whether they were held solely, jointly, or in trust

That's it. Not whether there's a will. Not the size of the estate alone. Those three things.

I've just published a plain-English guide that works through every common scenario. It's the same framework I've used with clients for two decades.

If you're an executor, a solicitor referring clients on, or an IFA whose clients regularly deal with estates, this might be worth saving.

❌ "I had Power of Attorney so I don't need probate."

We hear this every single week. And it breaks our heart every time, because it isn't true.

Power of Attorney ends the moment someone dies.

It doesn't matter how long you held it. It doesn't matter how carefully you managed their finances. The moment they pass away, that legal authority is gone.

To deal with their estate - sell the house, close the accounts, distribute their belongings -you still need a Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration.

Every time.

Discovering this at the wrong moment, when you're already grieving, is one of the most stressful things a family can face.

So we made something to help. 👇

Our free Probate Checker now includes:
✅ A plain-English guide to exactly when probate is needed
✅ A bank-by-bank breakdown of what each lender requires
✅ The full truth about Power of Attorney vs probate
✅ Your options — including doing it yourself for just £39.99

No personal details. No sign-up. Two minutes.

If this would help someone you know, please share it. You might save them weeks of confusion at the worst possible time. 💙

The real cost of probate is not what most people think.

Here is a quick breakdown:

Probate application fee: £300
Sealed copies (x8 approx): £128
Solicitor for full admin: £3,000 to PS15,000+ (only needed for complex estates)
DIY Probate: £39.99

The government fee is fixed.
The solicitor fee? Very much optional for many families.

For a straightforward estate with a valid will and no disputes, thousands of families do this themselves every year.

Take a look at the full 2026 cost breakdown.

Probate copy fees recently went up by nearly 1,000%.

In November 2025, the cost of each official copy of the Grant of Probate jumped from £1.50 to £16 EACH.

If you need 8 copies (pretty typical), that is £128.... just in copy fees.

We have done a full breakdown of every real cost of DIY probate in 2026.
The numbers might surprise you.

I have spent 23 years helping families through probate. And I still hear the same thing almost every week:

'We had no idea it was going to cost this much.'

So I have written the most honest, detailed guide I can on what DIY probate actually costs in 2026.

Not just the P£300 application fee (though that is where most guides stop.)

But also:
The sealed copies that now cost P£16 each (they used to be £1.50 - yes, really)
The valuation costs people forget about
The time cost nobody puts on an invoice
And how solicitor fees compare, side by side

If you are an executor trying to understand your options, this guide is for you.

A client left my office yesterday and said something I will never forget.

He had just been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

He came to me to sort out his will. Understandably he was worried, a lot on his mind.

When we finished, he shook my hand and said:

"You know what, Phil? You are like the Bank of Dave of the solicitors' world. I came in dreading this. I am leaving laughing."

I did not know what to say.

Because that is exactly why I do this.

Most people dread dealing with wills and probate. They expect jargon, cold offices, and invoices that make their eyes water.

We exist to be the opposite of that.

Genuinely helpful. Plain English. On your side — not just processing you.

If you have been putting off sorting your will because it all feels a bit much — come and talk to us.

It does not have to feel like that.

— Phil The Will
