My advice is to speak with a solicitor and financial planner to fully understand your position before you start to negotiate.

My role is to build confidence, knowledge and support the decision making process. So when those decisions are made she knows it is right.

Know the options, implications and what that decision will look like long term.

Cohabiting couples make up the fastest growing family type. But common law husband/wife is a myth.

Sometimes people don’t realise that if you are not married or in a civil partnership there is very little legal protection if you separate.

Resolution is campaigning for better rights for cohabiting couples but there is currently very protection in law.

I totally agree that knowledge is power.

When working with women who are going through divorce, we often talk about feelings towards money.

The burden of being solely responsible for making financial decisions is very real. The decisions that were previously made jointly or more often by her ex-husband without any input from her, are now decisions for her alone.

This is where I come in. Making the complex financial jargon simple, ensuring she understands every part of the financial information so that the decisions can be made with confidence.

A client recently said “Thanks for your advice and time, you have given me a greater sense of confidence”. 🩷

“The number of divorces in the UK has fallen.”

Office for National Statistics recorded the number of divorces falling from 113,505 in 2021 to 80,057 in 2022.

This might seem to be a good thing. With optimists believing that family harmony prevails.

However many divorce professionals will say that the current high cost of living and high mortgage rates have had an impact on the number of divorces.

Using sporting events as an excuse to abuse is never acceptable. Please be aware of these statistics and if you see or hear anything that causes you concern for somebody’s physical or emotional safety - report it.

I attended a webinar this week Chaired by HHJ Hess. The panel delivered an update on Pensions on Divorce for 2024.

One of many take aways from the session was how useful and user friendly the recently updated “A Survival Guide to Pensions on Divorce” is.

The guide provided by Advice Now gives helpful detail without jargon on the law in this area and how pensions are dealt with by the court in divorce cases.

Very useful for clients and advisers alike.
