A BBC investigation has highlighted how fraudsters target potential victims through social media platforms such as Instagram.

BBC reporter Joe Tidy was contacted out-of-the-blue by scammers pretending to be an attractive 36-year-old women asking for a date.

Mr Tidy realised it was a 'romance scam' but stayed in contact with the fraudsters to learn more about how these sorts of frauds works.

The scams are often referred to as 'pig butchering' with scammers 'fattening up' their victims to then con them out of money.

In the two months Mr Tidy was in touch with the fraudsters he learned about the psychological tricks that the scammers used.

Some practical advice on how to identify whether you may be the victim of a romance fraud.

Here are some key warning signs to look out for:

* The person you are in a romantic relationship with asks you for money or financial assistance.

* They refuse to meet in person or make excuses for not being able to meet in person.

* They move the relationship along very quickly, professing their love and commitment early on.

* They avoid talking about their personal life or provide inconsistent information about themselves.

* They ask you to keep the relationship a secret from friends and family.

* They make excuses for not being able to video chat or talk on the phone.

* They have a sob story or emergency situation that requires financial help from you.

*They display controlling or manipulative behavior, such as trying to isolate you from friends and family.
