🍬 Prolific North's Northern Marketing Festival brought together some of the region’s best, and we made sure there was a reason to stop at our stand!

Congratulations to Miles Dagnall of Edison Media, who had the best guess at the number of marshmallows in our jar and won himself a new Fitbit watch.

We work closely with creative, media and tech businesses around the North, so the festival was a natural place for us to be. It was a day of brilliant conversations with forward-thinking people, a reminder of just how much commercial ambition there is across Manchester and beyond.

If your child is on social media, do you understand your legal responsibilities?

Following recent developments, including Parliament actively considering restrictions on under-16s accessing social media, children’s use of social media has moved firmly into the mainstream and into the courts, making this one of the fastest moving areas of law affecting families today.

In their latest blog, Charlotte Beck, Partner and Head of Family, and Carla Murray, Partner and Head of Commercial, explore how recent legal changes, including the Online Safety Act, are shaping this fast-evolving area and what it means in practice for parents making decisions about their child’s online life.

The piece also considers how disputes around social media use are increasingly arising within child arrangements, and the practical steps parents can take to manage disagreements and protect children’s wellbeing.

🤝Valuations, investment decisions, and the role of AI in deal-making. These are the conversations shaping the North-West tech market right now.

Scott Sands, our Head of Corporate, was at Insider Media's Fast Tech 50 roundtable yesterday, hosted by KPMG at One St Peter's Square in Manchester. Chaired by Simon Keegan, Editor at Insider Media, senior leaders from the region's fastest growing technology businesses came together to discuss how value is being created, funded and realised, with AI's growing influence on investment decisions and what businesses are worth a central theme throughout.

Scott works with technology businesses on these issues every day, from raising investment to preparing for and completing deals. If your business is at that stage, or heading there, get in touch: https://www.slaterheelis.co.uk/corporate-law/corporate/

Recently, our Employment team has delivered some outstanding results for clients facing a range of complex and challenging situations. Here are some of the highlights:

✅ Debbie Coyne successfully defended a client after a former employee tried to reopen a previously settled claim, arguing she had signed it under pressure. The Tribunal ruled she was bound by the agreement and that reopening the case would be an abuse of process.

✅ Helen Frankland led a major workplace change project, guiding a client through transitioning over 100 employees to a new office working arrangement, managing the full consultation process, training employee representatives and holding individual meetings with staff to ensure a smooth and lawful outcome.

✅ The employment team has been recommended by other law firms for advising employees on settlement agreements during large-scale redundancy programmes and site closures led by Sylviane Kokouendo and Shazia Ashraf - a clear mark of the team’s trusted expertise in this area.

✅ Helen Frankland and Debbie Coyne worked directly alongside a client's team during a large business sale, managing all required employee consultation and securing a highly favourable outcome in a complex and sensitive situation.

At Slater Heelis, we pride ourselves on offering employment advice that is both commercially focused and genuinely supportive. Our Employment team is widely trusted for building strong, lasting relationships with clients and guiding them through complex matters with confidence and care. As a team of exceptional female lawyers, they bring a wealth of expertise and perspective that underpins the quality of service they deliver every day.

🏆Following our shortlisting in this year’s Manchester Legal Awards, we’re looking ahead to the ceremony as a fantastic opportunity to showcase the outstanding talent we’re proud to have across the firm. Putting together this year’s award submissions has been a rewarding process and has highlighted just how much our teams have accomplished.

Read a few of the highlights from their entries below:

⭐ Crime Team of the Year

The Crime team exemplified “exceptional capability in managing one of the most complex and sensitive matters of the year.”

“They combine deep legal expertise with empathy, clarity and professionalism, ensuring that every client feels supported, informed and represented to the highest standard.”

⭐ Partner of the Year - Alex Barley (Personal Injury & Clinical Negligence)

Alex has “consolidated and grown the clinical negligence offering to what is now a growing practice area for the firm”.

In a recent case, Alex was “working single-handedly against a large insurer-backed defence team, coordinated and secured the necessary evidence within a compressed timeframe £975,000 (with gross valuation of approximately £1.95 million on a 50/50 basis).”

A fantastic reflection of the strength across the firm, demonstrating the skilled and client-focused approach and consistent results our teams achieve. We look forward to celebrating with the Manchester legal community at the Kimpton Clocktower on 2 July!

On 6 April 2026, the Employment Rights Act 2025 introduced sweeping changes to UK employment law: the most substantial reform in a generation. For businesses of all sizes, understanding what changed and how it affects day-to-day operations is key.

The key changes that took effect include:

Removing the three-day waiting period for Statutory Sick Pay and extending eligibility to lower earners

Making paternity leave and unpaid parental leave day-one rights instead of requiring 26 weeks' service

Doubling the maximum protective award for collective redundancy consultation failures from 90 to 180 days' pay

Introducing whistleblowing protection for employees reporting sexual harassment

Creating a new legal requirement to keep adequate holiday records for six years

These changes affect recruitment, payroll, HR policies, and how managers handle absence and family leave requests. Employers who haven't yet updated their policies and contracts should prioritise this now, especially with further reforms coming in October 2026, including extended tribunal time limits.

Sylviane Kokuendo, Associate Partner in our Employment team, has prepared a comprehensive guide breaking down each change, what it means in practice, and the action steps employers should take to stay compliant. Getting ahead of these reforms protects your business and ensures you're treating employees fairly under the new framework.
