Restoring old properties has to be some of the most rewarding work, so I'll always raise this as a point of pride.
The blue PVC cladding and steel frame windows were doing this lovely property no justice, so they had to go.
Interestingly, a somewhat-traditional design had already been drawn up for the façade; but once a local resident dropped in an original photo from 1912 to us, the decision was made to return it as close as possible to original. (You can just see the property next to a butchers in their 'promotional photo.')
We completed the following:
- Remove all cladding, and tiles beneath (!)
- Replaced brickwork damaged beyond repair with reclaimed yellow stocks
- 'Jacked' the front of the property up around 50mm to account for the rotten shop-front.
- Repointed the brickwork in lime-mortar.
- Replaced the rotten timber bressummer with a steel frame.
- Designed and hand-made the shop front from hard wood (on-site).
- Fitted a custom made double glazed sash window to match the original (with floated glass externally) and cast a new window cill.
- (not visible) Re-slated the roof after repairing the roof structure, with reclaimed slates.
