Many couples who live together assume they have the same rights as married couples. When it comes to inheritance, the law sees it differently.

If you are not married or in a civil partnership and you pass away without a Will, your partner has no automatic right to inherit from your estate. It does not matter how long you have been together.

But without a Guardian legally appointed in your Will, that is not how it works. The courts decide. They will consider your family’s wishes, but the final say is not yours.
