Family courts do not reward the fastest start.
They often reward who lasts longest.

The London Marathon is a useful reminder that divorce is rarely won in the first emotional sprint.

Many people begin separation reacting to panic, anger or pressure to do something immediately.

But financial remedy cases in England & Wales are assessed very differently.

Judges look for consistency.

Credibility.

Measured disclosure.

Calm decision-making under pressure.

Endurance often beats early noise.

That is why the opening weeks of divorce matter.

The wrong tactical decisions made too quickly can affect cost, negotiations and final outcome long after the emotion settles.

Our latest article looks at what marathon thinking can teach us about divorce strategy over the long course.

Why does divorce drag on for years?

It’s not always because it’s complicated. Very often, it’s because of how lawyers are paid.

Most family law firms charge by the hour. The longer your case runs, the more they earn.

That isn’t about bad people. It’s about incentives.

When letters go back and forth…
When positions harden…
When hearings are added…

The clock keeps ticking. And so does the bill.

At Paradigm Family Law, we chose a different model. Where appropriate, we offer fixed fees.

That means...1) we don’t earn more by prolonging matters 2) we focus on reaching a fair outcome 3)we align with YOUR interests NOT ours.

Financial remedy in England & Wales follows structured principles. It is not guesswork.

If you want to understand more about how incentives shape the divorce process, we’ve explored this in more detail here:

https://whatwouldajudgesay.com/dirty-secret-divorce-family-law/

It explains the structural issue many clients only discover once they are deep into proceedings.

Divorce is hard enough.

It shouldn’t feel like a running meter.

Clarity. Strategy. Resolution.

Most divorces settle out of court. The dirty secret is why they take so long and cost so much. Learn how ADR changes everything.

For some people, 14 February brings flowers. For others, it brings clarity.

If you are in the middle of a separation, Valentine’s Day can sharpen emotions you have been managing quietly for weeks or months.

It can be tempting to react.
To send the message.
To raise the issue.
To make a point.

Family law, however, rewards steadiness.

Courts look at financial reality, future needs and sensible conduct. They do not attach meaning to the calendar.

If today feels heavy, focus on stability rather than symbolism.

When you are ready to consider next steps, do so calmly and with proper advice.

We know this day can feel isolating during separation. We hope this article makes it feel a little less so: https://paradigmfamilylaw.co.uk/valentines-day-and-divorce-coping-with-the-valentines-blues/

The Melania Mirage: when image masks the reality of marriage

Many marriages look stable, successful and carefully managed from the outside.
Behind that image, imbalance can sit quietly for years.

The recent Melania documentary was polished and controlled. What mattered wasn’t politics — but what was missing. Depth. Disclosure. Reality.

As family lawyers, we see this pattern every day. Public image can conceal financial control, dependency, and silence for decades. Divorce is often the moment that carefully maintained narrative breaks down.

Courts are not interested in presentation. They examine evidence: who controlled the finances, who depended on whom, and what information was withheld.

We’ve written about this dynamic — and why image carries no legal weight — in our latest article.

Many people who are thinking about divorce or separation are quietly asking the same questions:

Can I afford to separate? What happens to the house? What does life look like financially afterwards?

We see how isolating this stage can feel. Getting clarity on the practical and financial realities is often what helps people move forward - whichever decision they ultimately make.

We are delighted to share that one of the most meaningful achievements for Paradigm Family Law this year has been our inclusion in the Doyle’s Guide – London.

Doyle’s is not an award you apply for, buy into, or self-nominate. It is an independent, peer-led guide that ranks lawyers and firms based on judicial insight, peer feedback, and client experience. Inclusion reflects how practitioners are regarded by others working at the very top of the profession.

For us, this matters because our work often involves complex, high-stakes family law issues with an international dimension. Being recognised in a London guide reinforces that, regardless of where our clients are based, they can expect the same level of strategic thinking, clarity and delivery usually associated with the largest metropolitan firms.

We remain quietly proud of the work our team does every day — and grateful to be recognised for it in this way.

🎄 Divorce, separation and Christmas

Christmas can be one of the hardest times of year if you’re separated, separating, or trying to work out arrangements for the first time.

We get a lot of questions from parents at this time of year:

How do we divide Christmas Day?

What happens if one of us wants to travel?

Do we have to stick to what we’ve always done?

What if we can’t agree?

The short answer is: there isn’t a single “right” way — but there are sensible, child-focused and realistic approaches that work far better than leaving things unresolved until the last minute.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing practical guidance on:
• Christmas contact arrangements
• Managing expectations (yours and your children’s)
• Avoiding unnecessary conflict
• Planning ahead for the New Year

If you’re navigating separation this Christmas, you’re not alone — and clarity early really does make a difference.
