A reminder that every prison is different.

One thing we often see is people comparing their situation to someone else’s.

“That happened at another prison, so why isn’t it happening here?”

The reality is that every establishment has its own pressures, challenges, staffing levels, population, and ways of working.

What is happening in one prison today may look very different in another.

That’s why understanding the specific circumstances of an individual case is so important.

The prison estate is constantly changing and evolving, and navigating it isn’t always straightforward.

If there’s one thing we’ve learned, it’s that assumptions can cause just as much frustration as delays.

Sometimes the best starting point is simply understanding where things stand right now.

One part of the prison system that isn’t spoken about enough…

Parents.

No matter how old someone is, many mothers and fathers never stop worrying about their child.

And when that child is in prison, that worry can become overwhelming.

The sleepless nights.
Waiting for phone calls.
Wondering if they’re safe.
Trying to stay strong while carrying the emotional weight of it all.

For many parents, it can feel incredibly isolating, especially when they feel unable to speak openly about what they’re going through.

Whatever the circumstances, that concern and love for their child doesn’t simply disappear.

The impact on families is often far greater than people realise.

People often think prison only affects the person inside.

But the reality is far bigger than that.

Families feel it too.

The sleepless nights.
The waiting for phone calls.
The expensive journeys for visits.
The birthdays missed.
The constant uncertainty.
Trying to stay strong while navigating a system that often feels confusing and overwhelming.

For many families, life becomes split into:
“before prison” and “after prison.”

And while people on the outside are often expected to simply “carry on,” the emotional impact can be enormous.

Behind many prisoners is:
• a partner trying to hold things together
• parents worrying constantly
• children missing someone they love
• families trying to understand processes they were never prepared for

That side of the prison system is rarely spoken about enough.

Supporting families isn’t about excusing behaviour.
It’s about recognising humanity.

A quick update from us 💛

It’s been a busy few days behind the scenes, messages, conversations, and supporting people through situations that aren’t always straightforward.

There also seems to be a lot happening across the prison estate at the moment, with changes, delays, and increased pressure in different areas.

As always, situations can vary from one establishment to another, but it’s something we’re seeing come up more frequently.

We’ll continue doing what we can to help people understand what’s happening and navigate things as clearly as possible.

✨A really positive step forward✨

We’ve recently seen a situation where someone was successfully progressed to open conditions (Category D) after a long period of being held in closed conditions.

This kind of progression isn’t automatic, it involves careful consideration of risk, behaviour, engagement, and future plans.

In this case, a clear and structured approach was taken, looking at:
• progress made whilst in custody
• constructive use of time
• plans for release and resettlement
• and the overall reduction in risk

All of these factors were brought together to present a strong and realistic picture of readiness for open conditions.

The outcome was a positive one.

Progression through the system can feel slow and, at times, frustrating, especially when people feel they’ve been doing everything expected of them.

But decisions like this show that progress is possible, particularly when there is a clear understanding of what decision-makers are looking for and how to present that effectively.

Open conditions are an important step towards reintegration and release.

Getting to that stage isn’t always straightforward but with the right approach, it can be achieved.

A little reminder 💛

Not everything in the prison system moves quickly.
Not everything is clearly explained.
And not everything feels straightforward.

That doesn’t mean nothing is happening.

A lot of the time, progress looks like:
• understanding where you stand
• knowing what should be happening next
• and having a clearer picture of the process

It might not feel like a “big win” in the moment but clarity can make a difficult situation feel far more manageable.

If you’re navigating this system, take things one step at a time.

You’re not alone in it.

✨A quick update you may have seen in the news✨

The Government has announced plans to increase the use of electronic tagging for people leaving prison.

Here’s what that means in simple terms:

• More people may be tagged after release
Electronic tags are likely to be used more widely as part of licence conditions.

• Location can be monitored more closely
Some tags use GPS, meaning movements can be tracked in real time.

• Extra protection in certain cases
New technology is being introduced to alert authorities if someone goes near a victim.

• A shift towards supervision in the community
There is a growing focus on monitoring people after release, rather than relying only on time spent in custody.

What does this mean in reality?

For many, release from prison will come with more conditions and closer monitoring.

As always, how this affects someone will depend on their individual situation and licence conditions.

Final thought

This is part of a wider shift in how the system manages risk and supervision.

Understanding what these changes mean and how they apply, is becoming increasingly important.
