Lord chancellor Shabana Mahmood has declared that she would continue to ensure no one is treated differently in court because of the colour of their skin or religion, as legislation entered the statute books preventing guidance for judges on pre-sentence reports referring to race and ethnicity.

Lord chancellor Shabana Mahmood says legislation will ensure defendants are treated fairly in court.

The Supreme Court on 16 April 2025 unanimously ruled that ‘woman’ in the Equality Act 2010 refers to a biological woman.

Lord Hodge, Lady Rose and Lady Simler, with whom Lord Reed and Lord Lloyd-Jones agreed, said the language of the EA in its ‘context and purpose, demonstrate that the words “s*x”, “woman” and “man”…mean (and were always intended to mean) biological s*x, biological woman and biological man’.

Supreme Court unanimously allows appeal finding terms 'woman', 'man' and 's*x' in EA refer to biological s*x.

The Migration Advisory Committee's "Rapid Review of the Graduate Route" published today (14 May 2024) found no evidence of any significant abuse of the Graduate route.

The Migration Advisory Committee (MAC)'s report concluded that: “The Graduate route has broadly achieved, and continues to achieve, the objectives set by this government”.

“We found no evidence of any significant abuse of the Graduate route. By abuse we mean deliberate non compliance with immigration rules. However, we do have concerns over the use of recruitment agents by universities in certain markets in providing misleading information to prospective international students.”

Accordingly, the MAC “recommend retaining the Graduate route in its current form.”

The Graduate route was introduced in 2021, the government set objectives to ensure UK HE providers could attract talented students, maintain the UK’s international standing in higher education and enable employers to recruit skilled graduates.

The Migration Advisory Committee's report on the Graduate route, with a letter to the Home Secretary.
