Dan Cohen, led by Richard Barraclough KC, instructed in successful defence of case of man charged with Murder and Perverting the Course of Justice

Daniel Cohen, led by Richard Barraclough KC, represented a man charged with the murder of a young male in Sittingbourne, Kent. The male had gone to a location to purchase drugs and, after an altercation, the first defendant attacked him with a machete, causing him to run. He jumped a railing at the end of the road, falling down a grass verge onto the main road below. He was then hit by a motor vehicle, killing him on impact. The Crown offered no evidence against the client, on the charges of Murder and Perverting the Course of Justice, following an extensive review of the CCTV, in which it was demonstrated that he was little more than a bystander. The first defendant pleaded guilty to manslaughter and the second defendant pleaded guilty to drug related offences. Instructed by Reeves and Co Solicitors.

OIC ROADSHOW – MOCK TRIAL VOLUNTEERS ASKED TO SIT AND EXPERIENCE A MOCK TRIAL AS A JUROR
9 King’s Bench Walk invites prospective pupillage applicants and those considering a career at the Criminal Bar to act as jurors in a mock trial in the Crown Court sitting at Wood Green.
In 2014 Robyn Murdo-Smith, a retired police Sergeant, joined 9 KBW as a tenant and part of our team of criminal law specialists.
He established the Officer in the Case (OIC) Roadshow, in which 9 King’s Bench Walk works with the Metropolitan Police to give police officers a clear insight into what advocates require when defendants are charged and the case proceeds to trial.
This has developed over time into a series of lectures, the details of which are on the ‘9KBW OFFICER IN THE CASE (OIC) TRAINING’ section of the website, and a mock Crown Court trial which allows officers to gain experience giving live evidence.
The trial is both prosecuted and defended by members of 9 King’s Bench Walk, with a senior member of Chambers acting as Judge.
This unique opportunity offers a first-hand view of Crown Court advocacy, in particular witness handling, and insight into the minds of jurors—particularly helpful for when barristers begin their own practice.
The mock trial will be followed by a question-and-answer session with members of Chambers on life at the criminal Bar, what 9KBW can offer, and the pupillage application process more broadly.
Applications are welcome from undergraduate students, students currently undertaking the academic component of the Call to the Bar, and prospective pupillage applicants. All applicants must be over 18 years of age.
To apply go to the Pupillage recruitment page of Chambers website
https://www.9kbw.com/recruitment/pupillage and click the link to the application form under the heading OIC ROADSHOW – MOCK TRIAL EXPERIENCE AS A JUROR to download the application form, which you should complete and return to [email protected]
The Mock Trials will take place during 2026 and the dates will be finalised shortly and added to the website page and to this page. Applicants will be notified if they have been selected to take part and given details of the time and venue.
Further information about the OIC Roadshow and the training we provide to police officers can be found under the heading OIC Training on Chambers website

Samuel March is a member of Chambers Crime Team, instructed in cases at all levels of weight and gravity. Sam also specialises in cases involving Animal Welfare and has recently been instructed to defend clients in matters that involved the rescue of puppies from animal testing facilities.

Samuel represented two clients in a five-handed burglary trial before Peterborough Crown Court relating to the rescue by Animal Rising activists of 18 beagle puppies from a facility that breeds dogs for animal testing. Samuel argued that their actions were not “dishonest” by the standards of ordinary decent people. The defendants were acquitted. Rhys Allen prosecutes case of "worst domestic abuse case Judge has seen in 25 years"
Rhys Allen was instructed to prosecute in the trial, at Maidstone Crown Court, of a man who repeatedly violently assaulted his pregnant partner. The defendant was convicted and sentenced to the statutory maximum for ABH and a further year for the strangulation offence
Between June and July of 2025, the Defendant embarked on a tirade of abuse against the complainant, which included strangling her, hitting her and spitting in her face. This culminated in the events of 27 July 2025, where D attended the property of C while she was still pregnant with their child. He walked up the stairs, grabbed her by the hair and smashed her face through the toilet cistern. The assault continued for approximately 15 minutes as he repeatedly smashed her head against various pieces of furniture, the wall and the floor. During the assault, D urinated on her legs and shoved his fingers down her throat to stop her from screaming and getting help.

In a recent case Harriet Snookes defended in a matter brought under the Dangerous Dogs Act, where the dog in question had severely attacked and injured two people, both of whom required extensive hospital treatment. During the expert assessment of the dog whilst in police custody, the dog then tried to bite the defence expert. Despite the police and Crown Prosecution Service seeking an automatic destruction of the dog, Harriet was able to convince the Magistrates that the dog was able to come home under a Contingent Destruction Order.
