Thank you to everyone who joined our seminar, “Practical Experience from Dispute Lawyers: Application of Alternative Dispute Resolution,” last Wednesday.

Applying negotiation skills in real life

Participation in negotiation competitions can develop skills that extend far beyond the classroom.

Nikola emphasised how negotiation is relevant in all walks of life — from everyday situations to professional boardroom discussions. She reflected on finding solutions that work for both parties and approaching discussions with long-term outcomes in mind.

Debate vs Negotiation

Nikola shared her insights on the key differences between debate and negotiation.

While debate often focuses on winning or proving the other side wrong, negotiation prioritises collaboration, creativity and sustainable outcomes. According to Nikola, the negotiation in comparison to debate is even more applicable to real life.

Meet Nikola, the winner of Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer Commercial Negotiations.

Nikola, a third-year Business and Management student at Queen Mary, recently took part in the commercial negotiation competition. Competing alongside law students, she gained valuable experience in negotiation, collaboration and goal-oriented problem-solving.

Despite being in a different environment from her usual academic context, Nikola highlighted how transferable these skills are across disciplines. Her preparation, teamwork, and approach to the final stages demonstrated adaptability and strategic thinking.
