This final Update before the summer break, notes 3 Brazilian panelists from our webinar on Law-making in illiberal regimes on 20th July, have put their names to an open letter in defence of academic freedom and the Rule of Law. This is in support of their colleague Professor Conrado HĂĽbner Mendes, from the University of SĂŁo Paulo who has been threatened with criminal charges by the Brazillian Attorney General. It is a hefty reminder that the Rule of Law is not an abstract theory, but a principle under threat all around the world right now. That is why our fundraising campaign Stand Up for the Rule of Law is so important. The campaign has now closed but read more at: https://binghamcentre.biicl.org/newsitems/107/weekly-update

In our Friday Update, we reported on recent "citizen jury" deliberations on what members of the public think about data-driven measures to the pandemic, e.g. contact-tracing apps, and what conditions and safeguards do they see as necessary to justify their use? These were held as part of our project on The Role of Good Governance and the Rule of Law in Building Public Trust in Data-Driven Responses to Public Health Emergencies. At last week's UCL Constitution Unit conference on the constitutional reform agenda, the Lord Chancellor had a lot to say about Rule of Law, concluding "it is worthwhile to examine precisely what is meant by that term 'the rule of law' ". Lord Bingham provided us with an easily understood explanation of what the Rule of Law means in practice. We look forward to engaging directly in the discussions that have been triggered by the Lord Chancellor's remarks to show the Rule of Law's great potential.
