You have been accepted to study in the UK. Congratulations.
But let me ask you something: if you arrived in the UK tomorrow and your course started next month, would you be work ready?
This is something I encourage people to think about before they travel.
A lot of people focus so much on getting admission that they forget to prepare for what happens after they arrive.
If you are coming to study Healthcare, for example, start looking at the professional requirements for the roles you may want to pursue afterwards. Depending on your career path, this could include professional registration, relevant training, practical experience and other requirements.
If you are coming to study Project Management, don't wait until graduation before developing practical project management skills. Look at recognised certifications, learn the tools employers use and, where possible, volunteer or take on projects that allow you to practise what you are learning.
The good thing is that some of this preparation can happen before you leave Nigeria.
You can take relevant certifications. You can volunteer with an organisation. You can gain experience in your field. You can learn industry tools. You can build your CV and LinkedIn profile. You can start understanding the types of roles you will be applying for.
And no, I am not saying you should collect every certificate you see online.
I am saying: look at the career you want, find out what employers require, and start closing those gaps before you travel.
Because studying abroad should not just be about getting a certificate.
It should also be about positioning yourself for the opportunities that certificate can create.
So, if you are planning to study in the UK, what are you currently doing to make yourself work-ready before you leave Nigeria?
