The Home Office has introduced significant updates to the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS), focusing on automation, simplified residence rules, and stricter compliance checks.

This is a major shift towards automation and enforcement. While many will benefit from automatic upgrades, others face real risk if they have gaps in residence or evidence.

If you hold Pre-Settled Status, now is the time to:

โœ” Review your UK residence evidence
โœ” Check your eligibility for Settled Status
โœ” Take action before the Home Office does

We are pleased to share a recent successful outcome for a naturalisation application.

This was not a straightforward case. The applicant had a previous immigration breach which raised suitability concerns under the British nationality requirements. Careful consideration was therefore required to address the Home Officeโ€™s concerns.

We prepared detailed legal representations, setting out the applicantโ€™s circumstances, including their established family life in the UK, their positive contribution to the community, and the overall context of their immigration history.

Following submission, the application has now been approved.

What makes this case particularly rewarding is the journey behind it. We have been supporting this client since 2019, when they first approached us whilst in breach of immigration laws. Over the years, we assisted them in regularising their status, securing Indefinite Leave to Remain, and now successfully obtaining British citizenship.

This outcome reflects the importance of a well-prepared application and clear legal representations, particularly where there are historic issues affecting suitability.

All identifying details have been removed to protect client confidentiality.

If you require assistance with complex immigration or nationality matters, feel free to get in touch.

UK Asylum System Reform: Refugee Protection to be Reviewed Every 30 Months

On 2 March 2026, the UK Government introduced significant changes to the asylum system. Under the new rules, refugee status granted to adults will be temporary and reviewed every 30 months, replacing the previous framework which granted five years of protection followed by settlement.

At each review, protection will be extended for individuals who continue to face danger in their home country. Where conditions have improved and protection is no longer required, individuals may be expected to return.

The reforms form part of a broader policy shift aimed at reducing irregular migration and encouraging the use of legal migration routes, including work and study visas for refugees who wish to remain in the UK.

Unaccompanied children will continue to receive five yearsโ€™ leave, while further policy considerations for this group remain under review.

If you require advice or assistance regarding asylum or UK immigration matters, please feel free to contact Visa Professionals.

British dual nationals: important UK entry changes from February 2026

British dual citizens travelling to the UK without a British passport may soon face difficulties at the border.

From 25 February 2026, British nationals returning to the UK from overseas will be required to present either a valid British passport or a certificate of entitlement to confirm their right of entry. Where neither document is available, travellers may be required to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) using their non-British passport, where eligible.

Previously, dual nationals were often able to enter the UK using a foreign passport and rely on supporting evidence of British nationality. This position is now changing as part of the Home Officeโ€™s wider move towards a fully digitised border and immigration system.

Who is affected?
These changes impact British dual citizens living or travelling abroad, including those who have acquired British citizenship but have not yet obtained a British passport. Travel on or before 24 February 2026 will not be affected.

Key costs to be aware of:
โ€ข British passport (adult): ยฃ94.50
โ€ข Certificate of entitlement: ยฃ589
โ€ข Overseas applications may attract higher fees

Why the change?
The Home Office has been advising dual nationals for some time to travel on a British passport. The upcoming enforcement reflects enhanced pre-departure checks and the roll-out of the ETA system.

How Visa Professionals can assist?
We advise on first-time British passport applications, renewals, and certificates of entitlement, ensuring clients remain compliant and avoid disruption to travel plans.

If you or your clients may be affected, early advice is strongly recommended. Please contact Visa Professionals for tailored guidance.

๐Ÿ”” UK Immigration Update: Higher English Requirement from 8 January

The English language requirement for Skilled Worker, Scale-up and High Potential Individual visas has now increased from CEFR B1 to CEFR B2.

This is a significant change, requiring applicants to demonstrate stronger English skills across speaking, listening, reading and writing, usually through an approved Secure English Language Test.

Key points:
โ€ข New applicants and those switching routes must now meet B2.
โ€ข Existing workers extending on the same route can continue at B1, but may face higher requirements at settlement stage.
โ€ข Further increases are expected, including proposals for higher English standards at ILR and new requirements for dependants.

These changes will impact recruitment planning, candidate pools and compliance for sponsors.

For tailored advice on how this may affect your workforce or hiring strategy, contact Visa Professionals.

๐Ÿšจ Important Update for Travellers: โ€œNo Permission, No Travelโ€ โ€“ UK to Fully Enforce ETA Scheme from February 2026

The UK government has announced a major change affecting visitors from 85 countries, including the USA, Canada, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands and many more.

๐Ÿ“… From 25 February 2026, travellers who do not require a visa will no longer be able to travel to the UK without an approved Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA).
This marks the next phase of the UKโ€™s move towards a fully digital immigration system and a contactless border.

๐Ÿ”น ETAs will be mandatory for all visa-exempt travellers
๐Ÿ”น Carriers will check ETA status before boarding
๐Ÿ”น Travellers without permission will be refused travel
๐Ÿ”น ETA applications cost ยฃ16 and are usually decided within minutes (allow up to 3 working days)

Since the introduction of ETA in 2023, over 13.3 million visitors have successfully applied, benefiting from faster and smoother entry at UK borders.

The Home Office has confirmed that this enforcement will give the UK stronger control over who enters the country and will form part of the wider eVisa rollout.

Who does not need an ETA?
โœ” British citizens
โœ” Irish citizens
โœ” Britishโ€“Irish dual nationals travelling on a British or Irish passport

What should travellers do now?
If you plan to visit the UK after February 2026 and you are from a visa-exempt country, you must apply for an ETA before travelling. Applications are made via the official UK ETA app.

At Visa Professionals, we support individuals and organisations in navigating the UKโ€™s changing immigration landscape. If you or your staff require guidance on ETA requirements or UK entry rules, our team is here to help.

๐Ÿ“ข Proposed Changes to UK Settlement Rules โ€“ Consultation Launched

The Home Office has announced a consultation on significant reforms to the UKโ€™s settlement (ILR) route. These are proposals only and no changes have been implemented at this stage, but they signal the direction of future policy.

Key proposals include:

Increasing the standard qualifying period for settlement from 5 years to 10 years for most visa categories.

Introducing an โ€œearned settlementโ€ system, linking ILR to continued employment, tax and National Insurance contributions.

Requiring stronger English language skills and evidence of integration, potentially including community involvement or volunteering.

Applying stricter criteria relating to criminality, immigration compliance and financial independence.

Reviewing eligibility for access to benefits and social housing for newly-settled migrants.

The consultation is now open, and the final outcome may change depending on feedback submitted by professionals, employers and the public.

At Visa Professionals, we are monitoring the consultation closely and will provide updates as more information becomes available. If you or your organisation may be affected by the proposed reforms, we are here to advise and support you.
