Exciting News for Ukrainians in the UK! 🇺🇦
We are thrilled to announce that Ukrainians seeking sanctuary in the UK following Russia's illegal invasion will now have certainty about their future, thanks to the government's new visa extension scheme.
Starting from early 2025, individuals under one of the Ukraine visa schemes can apply to stay in the UK for an additional 18 months, with continued access to work, benefits, healthcare, and education. This means those who arrived under the initial visas could potentially remain in the UK until September 2026.
When the conflict erupted, the UK government swiftly introduced three generous Ukraine schemes—the first of their kind worldwide. Under Homes for Ukraine, the Ukraine Family Scheme, and the Ukraine Extension Scheme, visa holders were granted 3 years leave in the UK, originally set to expire in March 2025.
This 18-month extension underscores the government's enduring commitment to Ukraine, coming as the world marks nearly 2 years since Russia's reprehensible invasion. Since the launch of our Ukraine schemes, over 283,000 Ukrainians have found sanctuary in the UK, supported by the immense generosity of the British public.
In addition to this support, the UK has provided significant military, humanitarian, and economic assistance to Ukraine, totaling £11.8 billion.
Minister for Legal Migration and the Border, Tom Pursglove MP, expressed solidarity with Ukraine, condemning Putin's illegal war and reaffirming the UK's commitment to offering refuge to those fleeing conflict.
Minister for Housing and Communities, Felicity Buchan, celebrated the positive contributions of Ukrainian refugees in the UK, thanking sponsors for their support and encouraging more individuals to step forward as hosts.
Charge d’Affaires at the Embassy of Ukraine to the UK, Eduard Fesko, welcomed the decision, highlighting the continuous support provided by the UK government to Ukrainians seeking temporary protection.
The 18-month visa extension offers certainty and reassurance to Ukrainians in the UK amidst ongoing conflict, helping them plan for their future. Applications will open online in early 2025 for eligible individuals, including those under the Homes for Ukraine, Ukraine Family Scheme, or Ukraine Extension Scheme.
We stand with Ukraine and remain committed to providing a safe haven for those in need. 🌍💙
