“IF YOU BUILD IT, THEY WILL COME”
I hail from a small town 40 miles north of New Delhi, India, from a business-class family. I am the first generation not only to attend college but also to qualify as a lawyer (India) and live abroad.
My father was a contractor of mechanical tools in his 40s. Due to extensive travel required for his work, he decided to switch to starting a business, so he could stay closer to the family. We are jewelers by ancestry, so he chose to start a jewelry business. It seemed like a safe bet, but he had no prior experience in the trade and wasn’t very socially active because of his previous travel commitments.
When he bought a shop to begin this venture, I was a 17-year-old son, worried about my own career path. As a small-town boy—awkward, not very bright, and unsure—I was skeptical.
As they were setting up the shop, I asked my dad how on earth we’d get customers since no one knew us in town, despite us being born and raised there.
My dad simply said:
“If you build it, they will come.” and YES THEY DID.
Now, precisely 25 years later, I find myself in the same position as my dad was. I have taken the leap to “build the shop,” leaving it to professionals like you to support me.
My father started his business at the age of 48 with no prior knowledge of the trade and faced stiff competition. Yet, within a year, we were the best in the market. His key values were quality, confidence, and sincerity toward his trade and clients.
He always advised me: “Mohit, always add salt to the flour (be reasonable in your earnings) and not flour to the salt (don’t try to become a millionaire overnight).”
I, on the other hand(with his blessings), am supported by an amazing team of cost draftspersons, billers, and support staff. I hope we get your instructions and have the opportunity to support your business by collaborating with you.
