Recorded in the Inn’s Black Books is a letter dated 22 September 1945 from a lady thanking the Inn for opening its gardens to the public during the Second World War.

She wrote: “Your action in allowing the public to share with members of the Inn the peaceful beauty of their lawns and trees all through these years of bombing and mental strain has been appreciated by thousands.”

Over 80 years later, the gardens remain a place of calm in the heart of London. You can experience them for yourself at Open Gardens on Saturday 6 June 🌿https://ow.ly/6ppS50Z5bWF

in 1647, Richard Cromwell, son of Oliver Cromwell and later Lord Protector from 1658–59, was admitted to the Inn.

The entry describes him as “son and heir apparent of Oliver Cromwell of Ely in the Isle of Ely, Cambridgeshire, arm[iger].”

👀 Can you spot the signature of John Thurloe, Oliver Cromwell’s Secretary of state and spymaster, among his manucaptors (guarantors)?
